I can’t believe it - after years of advocacy, exclusionary zoning has ended in Cambridge.

We just passed the single most comprehensive rezoning in the US—legalizing multifamily housing up to 6 stories citywide in a Paris style

Here’s the details 🧵

I am proud to have worked on two bills that have just been introduced in the Illinois State Senate that would:
1. Allow cyclists to ride side by side, ride contraflow on one way streets, and permits Idaho stops (SB2111)
2. Allow for urban municipalities to lower speeds to 10MPH (SB2112)

Kinda crazy that @govpritzker.illinois.gov's IDOT and CDOT put these slides together and yet they are still backing the least ambitious plan called "The Essential" that would re-build *essentially* the same highway on Chicago's lakefront.

THE SHARED STREETS BILL JUST DROPPED!

SB 5595 legalizes a type of street (“woonerf” or “home zone”) common across Europe where cars, bikes, and pedestrians share the same space but speed limits are low and pedestrians are the priority. lawfilesext.leg.wa.gov/biennium/202...

Just in one year, just the clean air act, prevented hundreds of thousands of early deaths. The lowest possible estimate of the benefits found that benefits outweigh the costs by 3 to 1. The most likely estimate is 30 to 1. The high estimate is 90 to 1. Ninety. Nine Zero. www.epa.gov/clean-air-ac...

Still one of my favorite maps: the ‘L’ and the commuter lines were always supposed to work together as a single network to provide rapid transit to the entire city. The decision to stop doing so was political, which means the way to fix it is also a matter of political will too. #RevenuesAndReform

It’s simple: in congested urban areas, the supply of free roads can’t keep up with demand to drive. Pricing allows faster movement for people who need to drive (e.g., deliveries), while investing money into better transit for people who don’t.

Pricing isn’t punishment, it’s making the roads work.
New York's new congestion charge has dramatically reduced traffic congestion.
We should copy their success, as recommended by @grattaninstitute.bsky.social.

Both highways & transit are way too expensive to build in the U.S. (a subject for another post) but only transit gets torn apart for cost overruns & is thus deemed unworthy of getting built. Very few say “don’t build highways because they cost too much.” The highways just get built.

Today, @governor.ca.gov officially launched the new State Rail Plan, with few changes from last month's soft launch. The plan recommits to VMT reduction, calls for 1500 mi of electrified rail by 2050, and promotes important reforms. Here's a first look at what's in it: www.gov.ca.gov/2025/01/07/c...

Just read the response from Costco to shareholders requesting it back down from DEI. It was glorious. It begins "Our Board has considered this proposal and believes … an enterprise rooted in respect and inclusion is appropriate and necessary." and gets better. A happy investor #diversityandinclusion

Through design, the Dutch made the cycle lanes a priority — visually and physically.

Bicycle underpasses are an essential part of Dutch cycling infrastructure; built below busy arterials and railways to improve safety and flow of traffic.

Rennes's first metro line (9.4 km) was quoted at €449 million in 1995 which is €2023 700 million -> €75 m/km.

Line b (14 km) cost €1.3 bn or approx €2023 1.5 bn -> €107 m/km.

Part of the difference is related to the higher standards of line b: longer platforms, wider trains, bigger stations, etc.

When you look at small cities (200k or less) that built a light metro (not many indeed), there is a common pattern that helps explain how they managed to do so: the deep bored alignments and the related deep C&C stations are kept to the strictest minimum, just to go through the denser core.

There's a strong inverse relationship between median household income and zero-car households in Chicago at the tract level, unless you live within a half-mile of an 'L' station.

In other words, rich people will ditch their cars if they can walk to the train.
