Good news out of Iowa! Big thank you & congratulations to the advocates who worked on this! It is abundantly clear these bans are unconstitutional, but that won't stop them from trying. We need to be just as organized & just as relentless. Good job team!
Federal Judge Blocks Iowa Law Restricting Sexually Explicit School Books (Gift Article)
The ruling is a victory for the publishers and free speech advocates who challenged the law, but the judge’s decision is far from final.

INCREDIBLE Ruling!

Judge Reyes just ruled that transgender people have served honorably in the military, judges Trumps trans military ban - which states trans people are inherently dishonorable - as unconstitutional and motivated by animus.

Trans military members may continue to serve.

They're called public records for a reason. Starting today, WIRED will *stop paywalling* articles that are primarily based on public records obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, becoming the first publication to partner with @freedom.press to offer this for our new coverage.

My novel Last Night at the Telegraph Club and 9 more books are under review for a statewide ban in South Carolina. There will be a hearing tomorrow 3/13. I'm not optimistic that LNATTC will survive this challenge, but it's still possible. Context here: www.malindalo.com/blog/2025/3/...

BREAKING

Authorities in the Philippines have arrested former President Rodrigo Duterte.

This comes after the ICC issued a warrant related to Duterte’s role in crimes against humanity during his administration’s “war on drugs,” which resulted in thousands of deaths and many extrajudicial killings.

The people who read our books are kids. They don’t have money to spend. They don’t subscribe to publications that review books. They find us at the library. If the books aren’t there, it’s like they don’t exist. And that makes kids feel like *they* don’t exist.
A Friday reminder that having your book banned doesn't sell books.

Only THE MOST banned books see support, and I assure you all those creators would prefer their books were NOT banned instead.

There's no silver lining. It's just the knowledge that ppl hate you!

Ok have a good weekend

Everything We Never Had is a modern classic. I would pair this with excerpts from the Grapes of Wrath. Students need to hear all the stories and see themselves in literature. I love how the story is multi-generational. @randyribay.bsky.social
