Not Gonna Lie, folks. I am incredibly dubious in this day and age of any study that states 'you don't reach adulthood until X' considering how the 'full brain at 25' thing has been weaponized by both young and old to avoid responsibility and deny autonomy

I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

wow, that might be the best-example-yet of this bsky.app/profile/jake...
bsky is wild. You post a picture of a tree and say "this is a nice tree" and someone will reply "TRUMP WOULD HATE THAT TREE BECAUSE HE'S A CUNT"

the actual suicide of the West will be combining a rapidly aging population with hostility to migrants. however we must give credit to East Asia, especially Japan, for pioneering this model.

I think we lost some work because authors were afraid to show their weirdnesses, rough edges, to ask uncomfortable questions.
We can debate all day about who got cancelled and whether or not they deserved it, but one thing I have noticed is that a lot of queer YA written from ~2019-2022 has a kind of sterile after-school-special vibe where you can just tell they sanitized the fuck out of it to appease the Twitter hivemind

One time I genuinely heard someone say that people were less homophobic in the 2000s and I was like "we had to invent an entire separate word to describe straight men who gave a shit about their appearance to let people know they weren't gay." Not to mention all the, you know, actual hate crimes.

One of the strangest aspects of aging that they don't warn you about is watching as history gets rewritten right in front of your face and people 20 years younger than you confidently tell you about something you lived through and get it completely wrong.

The three main UK subs seem to show the range of the country right now

CasualUK is people mostly complaining about rude bus drivers, bad parking, bin collections etc

AskUK is "we should bring back national service/exams are too easy/nobody is allowed to say Merry Christmas"

UKPolitics wants war

I think one unintentional very funny side effect of everyone trying to spot AI prose is it's leading to people who had perfected the smug redditor register before LLMs were a thing getting more and more mad at being called AI because their insufferable posting tics were what it learned from

I've managed to through some means get my online ads (on Reddit app) to be random Kickstarters/self pub books/steam pages and wow I'm getting vague alarm bells from a fantasy novel promoted as "clean epic fantasy" with your pull quote praising its "return to sincere, heroic storytelling"

When you make a character shorter you've gotta preserve their total surface area, so yes, it IS in fact necessary to also give them a fatter ass. It's just math.

Sometimes you'll see an indie tabletop RPG that's like, okay, wonderfully imaginative premise, and there's some genuinely innovative stuff going on here rules-wise, but you can REALLY tell it's never been in the hands of a playtest group whose GM wasn't also the game's author.

I'm not a proper D&D hater because I prefer to analyse the game's dysfunctional culture of play as a product of economic incentives rather than a product of the text. A TRUE hater must be prepared to blame anything and everything on the text of the rules, up to and including their parents' divorce.

people get worked up when western cartoons do lazy and rubbish anime parodies because they pick low hanging fruit like sailor moon but it's worth remembering how many anime will just go "lol its Common Biker" play two bars of Let's Go Rider Kick and have one of the characters wear a scarf

Analogue to the Bechdel Test for people who watch too many things for children like me: can two characters have a conversation during an episode without it being solely about their one defining hobby/interest/personality trait

I hope this makes sense but I think in terms of anime/JRPG archetype characters there's a kind of fine line between "stock character" and "hat planet denizen" like are you "the big jolly one" or "the Food Guy who talks only about food", I may be sub tweeting fire emblem a bit here but there's others
