One day someone will write a book about the two phases of the southern strategy. Phase one, where they obscured the racism behind dog whistles, and phase two, where they reaped the effects of phase one by dropping the dog whistles and bringing back loud and proud racism as a “reaction” to wokeness.
What's most disturbing about rhetoric on the right now is this: once upon a time, there was a lot of intellectual sublimation (so to speak) on the right - per that old Lee Atwater quote about the Southern Strategy. (You remember that quote.)
There are many genealogical paths that connect our present moment to the American past. If you have 30 minutes to waste, I think you'll find that this 1970 campaign ad by Asa Carter resonates, to an alarming degree, with the worldview and rhetoric of the MAGA right. archive.org/details/asa-...

I remember telling my young children that this boorish hateful man desecrating the office of the president was an anomaly and this isn’t how it will always be.
They’re adults now. This is all they’ve ever known.

The draft dodging idiot posted a pic of this West Point plaque. It contains these words:

“Our American Code of Military Obedience requires that, should orders and the law ever conflict, our officers must obey the law.”

That is precisely what Senator Mark Kelly told officers to do. #NoSedition

Trump has now overseen the two longest government shutdowns in history — with the current one reaching 36 days.

He ran on fixing a broken system and helping working people.

Instead, he’s making the system even worse and shafting working people by gutting the social safety net.

Happy Halloween. Trickle-down economics is nothing more than a cruel hoax designed to enrich corporations and the super-rich. For working people, it's been 40 years of all trick and no treat. Enough.

As Elizabeth Anderson points out, a major consequence of the Conservative Protestant Work Ethic is the belief that it is better for 1000 deserving people to go without aid than for a single undeserving person to receive it.

Corporate profits have hit record highs.

CEOs are paid 280x as much as a typical worker.

We're subsidizing corporations that pay lousy wages by funding food stamps with our taxpayer dollars.

Yet too many focus their ire on the working poor who need help instead of targeting corporate greed.
SNAP exists because politicians take campaign contributions from large corporations in exchange for letting those corporations pay a poverty wage so low that it must be subsidized with taxpayer money, paid by middle class workers barely getting by—all so 700 billionaires can have a few extra billion

President Trump has directed agencies to roll back the use of disparate impact liability, a key civil rights safeguard that protects people from policies that may appear neutral but disproportionately harm marginalized communities.

We've fought for civil rights for decades, and aren't stopping now.
Disparate Impact, Explained
By rolling back “disparate impact” rules, the Trump administration threatens decades of progress against systemic discrimination in housing, jobs, and education.
