This piece on how @nytimes.com "based an entire political strategy on a statistical artifact" was excellent and needs way more publicity -- share with all your reactionary centrist friends! cc @volts.wtf @ifbookspod.bsky.social
Look. It would be great if there was one simple trick for winning elections. But 'just be more moderate' isn't it.

In fact, you can use the NYT's exact method to 'prove' a 'Progressive Advantage' of +1.4 pts.

This piece shows what's really going on: funded candidates do better than unfunded ones.
The New York Times’ “Moderation Advantage” Is a Statistical Illusion
After accounting for money and incumbency the supposed electoral bonus for moderate candidates vanishes entirely.

Interesting long thread - particularly how to parse the "gotta do what you gotta do to get elected" vs "willing engagement we with the moneyed elites" angle
Second off, Zohran's own policies are also not particularly progressive. And he's not exactly a rag to riches story either.

And Zohran has spent his time after the primary victory courting all the wealthiest New Yorkers and working corporate/national media.

Trump's mechanism to pay the troops during the shutdown is by far the most illegal budgetary action he's taken as POTUS, potentially setting the stage to break everything.

It's also needless because Congress would easily pass a troop pay bill if Johnson were willing to gavel in.

Long thread.

Right, but aren't many Latino Americans already in the "shush that child or we're all deported" bad zone?

Good article that nicely fills in the recent history of gerrymandering since 2010. I knew about the Republican plan to kick it off with capturing key state legislatures, I did NOT know they frickin' announced it in the WSJ and the Dems still didn't do anything to stop it. Infuriating.

1. The FCC has suspended a rule, schedule to go in effect this year, that would have banned prisons from price gouging on phone calls.

Right now, at some jails, a 15-minute phone call can cost over $11.

The decision benefits some of Trump's top donors.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will no longer enforce a rule capping the price of prison phone calls, according to an announcement made Monday by FCC Chairman Brendan Carr.
