In 2024, I wrote a story for Texas Monthly about Michelle Haas, whose complaints resulted in the removal of books about slavery from historic Texas slave plantations. Haas sued us, alleging defamation, and was represented by the preferred lawyer of billionaire J.P. Bryan. Today, we won on appeal.

We remand the cause to the trial court with instructions to (1) grant appellants' TCPA motion to dismiss, (2) award court costs and reasonable attorney's fees to appellants in accordance with the statute, (3) consider whether to assess sanctions against Haas in accordance with the statute. See TEX. Civ. PRAC. & REM. CODE ANN. § 27.009(a).

Every single one of these clips was taken today in downtown Portland. Portland doesn’t want or need a federal takeover. If Trump insists on sending federal “resources” he can start with funding health care, bridges, affordable housing, and wildfire protection to name a few.

Maybe it’s time to retire fireworks 🧨 and figure out other solutions. I personally don’t find them as exciting as I used to and I wonder how others feel. I know pet owners tend to hate them for their impact on their little friends.

I’m a virologist who dislikes this take on health economics because I think it’s reckless & dangerous to take $8.2 trillion in life value from Americans.
Azouley et al3 estimate that a 33% reduction in NIH funding would be associated with a 15.3% reduction in patents associated with new drugs. We assume, like them, that this will lead to 15.3% fewer new therapies.3 Although we do not quantify this here, cuts already made and proposed future staffing cuts at the US Food and Drug Administration may further slow the pace of drug approvals. New therapies lengthen lives.4,5 Buxbaum et al6 estimate that new medical therapies generated 48% of the 3.3-year increase in life expectancy in the US between 1990 and 2015. If biomedical research remains as important in the future as in the past, a 15.3% reduction in new therapies would lead to a reduction in life expectancy of 0.24 years per person over the next 25 years. In a population of more than 340 million, this reflects 82 million fewer years of life. Economists use various methods to estimate the value of life and typically find that years of life are valued at roughly between $100 000 and $200 000 per year.6 Even using the lower value in calculations, the lost health from the NIH cuts translates into more than $8.2 trillion ($100 000 × 82 million years). These losses would be weighed against the gains that emerge from reduced public spending. Over 25 years, the proposed annual savings of $20 billion amounts to $500 billion in budgetary reductions. This pales in comparison to the $8.2 trillion
