One point I like to make about the Satanic Panic was that it wasn't even necessarily religious. My mom was not a religious woman, but she legitimately believed her coworker abused his wife because he played D&D too much and lost track of reality. Certain "weird" things just made you evil.

My movie hot take is that Vin Diesel is the only true modern auteur. Wrote his character for D&D, personally involved in the script, the funding definitely only happened because of him, then the character acting is 100% him.

1/ In terms of comparative examples, when anybody brings up the "man of his time" defense of Gygax, I always think of Palladium and the infamous early insanity table.
For those unaware, Palladium took an outdated version of the DSM as inspiration and included "homosexuality" as an insanity.

I am doing #NaGaDeMon again this month! RL has been my first task, so nothing exciting yet but tonight I hope to dive in.
