This is what I try to always tell people: food banks can do way more with your money than you can, due to bulk buying deals. And they can do way, way more with your money than with the canned goods you didn’t want to eat
spoke with the executive director of my local food bank today and got this really incredible line: "if you donate 1 can of green beans, we can give away 1 can of green beans. but if you donate a dollar, we can give away 6 cans of green beans"

The truth is: humans don't generally enjoy diversity. We prefer people who are like us, sound like us, love what we love. We really like it when they agree with us, but we are better when they don't. Sameness may attract you, but difference makes you stronger.
You have to understand what pieces like this from the NYT are and are not.

They are not an honest assessment of the state of politics today.

They are a negotiation tactic—an effort by a calcified, right-leaning legacy institution to steer the discourse in a direction more palatable to elites.

Today, a thread to honor and celebrate #IndigenousPeoplesDay.
The world is so big, so there will be a second and maybe a third part.
We will begin with Zuni weaver We’wha (1849-1896).

🧵 1/20
We’wha (1849-1896), a notable weaver and potter Lhamana (Zuni Two Spirit), took on both masculine and feminine tasks as a Zuni cultural ambassador and pottery and textile artist.
Also a spiritual leader, We’wha endeavored to preserve the history, traditions, and knowledge of the Zuni people.

Jane Goodall was one of a few people to earn a PhD without an undergraduate degree.

It was thought that her lack of formal academic training would allow her to remain unbiased by traditional thought and study the chimps with an open mind.

It worked. ❤️

I think it's a waste of time to spend your time on social media yelling at people who have the exact same level of power that you do to change the world which is to say very little.

It IS a good use of your time to enlist other people into actions and projects you would like them to join with you.
