History person, Army officer, transplanted Buckeye, not really that angry anymore. Writes stuff. Some Star Wars. Refugee from Twitter. Views do not reflect or represent the DoD's. He/him/his. angrystaffofficer.com
Pinned
This was my pinned tweet over on Twitter. It will remain my pinned tweet here. Because the issue of sexual harassment and assault in the Army still persists. We must do better.

I Didn’t Know
She had a senior non-commissioned officer buy her lingerie, passing it off as a joke. I didn’t know. She was mentally broken down and denigrated, day after day, by a male officer who was her comman…

Why I love WWI memoirs

Story from one I’m transcribing today about a joe rushing to his stokes mortar to put over a counter barrage wearing only his underwear and a sweater vest and holding a plate of beans and then hanging rounds while still holding onto the plate of beans

I love doughboys

Btw we’re now as far from the 2001 invasion of Afghanistan as Operation Torch in North Africa 1942 was from the end of the Meuse Argonne Campaign in 1918

Do with that what you will

Hey, if you’re interested in studying West Pointers in the Civil War…don’t read this. I haven’t wanted to rage quit a book this hard for a while, but the rampant use of blanket simplifications and uncited statements is getting me close

African American veterans and their families and communities were essential to sustaining Black Civil War memory over the late 19th century and twentieth century. I discuss my own ancestor and others in Unforgettable Sacrifice. I proudly remembered them yesterday.

I spent a good chunk of the weekend in the 1862 Maryland campaign in the game “War of Rights”

The number of times people yelled “For the Edmund Fitzgerald!” during an attack was sorta heartwarming tbh

Don’t mind me, I’m just making soup and sobbing about the Edmund Fitzgerald

The Heritage Foundation should go hang out with the Taliban, they’re kindred spirits
1/ The US Government has quietly removed a memorial to Black soldiers who died in World War II from the Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten, South Limburg. The move follows a complaint from the right-wing Heritage Foundation to the American Battle Monuments Commission. ⬇️

This is why Ezra Douthglesias’ constant drumbeat of Just Do An Abundance of Popularism grates & misses the mark. Dems <can’t> Do An Abundance of Popularism because our institutions empower people who hold views contrary to supermajorities of the public. What is actually <popular> is not represented.
Once again, the Actual Thing the Actual Democrats Must Actually Do is to make institutional reform the platform & to explain to voters why & how Doing A Popularism is the <consequence> of that, not a prerequisite.

Rhode Island has a chance to do the funniest thing ever here

(RI almost tanked ratifying the Constitution bc it really liked not recognizing debts from other states levied in anything other than RI’s currency, a system that benefited them immensely and made NY have a rage stroke)
They’ve all gone mad.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott: “After the polls close tomorrow night, I will impose a 100% tariff on anyone moving to Texas from NYC.”

Man, the “point blank sandwich” discourse made it feel almost like Olde Twitter which of course made me realize how much I miss Olde Twitter

Thanks, @johnrogers.bsky.social, for bringing a reminder of the joys we once had

The surface danger zone for sandwiches really depends on the ingredients tbh. An Italian sub, for example, has a high frag rate because of the bread consistency but better aerodynamic range, while a croque monsieur and the Rueben have less range but more splatter.
It's not in this article but the government asserts that the sandwich was thrown at "point blank range", which implies subway sandwiches have defined effective weapon ranges of varying lethality, and I would like to see the government's chart of these ranges.

Alright gents listen up!

Yesterday we covered cone of sandwich fire and the beaten, or, “floured” zone. Today we will be discussing enfilade, plunging and flanking fires. As well as the preferred sandwiches for each.

Open your menus to page three.

Dressed up kinda vaguely as a 19th century naval officer to hand out candy for Halloween and let everyone guess as to my costume

Here’s a few of the guesses as to who I was:
Washington
Hamilton
A pirate
Napoleon
A doorman
A prince

And my fave, just “Bridgerton”

Whose land this is I do not know
The statue fell down long ago;
No one will mind me stopping here
To watch the sand o’er ruins blow.

My camel friend must think it queer
To rest with no oasis near
And precious little shade these days
Gives Ozymandias, I fear.

(1/2)
This is just to say

I have looked on
the works
that were in
the desert

and which
you were probably
thinking
would still stand

Forgive me
they were trunkless
so vast
and so old
Once upon a desert sandy
As through winds the trav'ling man he
Spied the face of Ozymandy
Lying, simply lying there
Suddenly there was some writing
Pon the plinth that he was sighting
That the sand and time were blighting
Quoth the statue, "Now despair"

A college acquaintance on FB shared a long and overly verbose screed that can be boiled down to “people are poor because of what I perceive to be their sins”

We’re just really trying to get back to workhouses and company towns and debtors prisoners, huh

At some point I’ll sit down and collate the overlap of progressive German 1848 revolutionary immigrants in Turner Clubs, Wide-Awake Clubs, and 1850s-1860 militia companies - at which point I will reach full limit of potential and probably self combust

DHS deceptively spliced images from different cities and times in videos sowing fear about "chaos" in Chicago and Washington, D.C., a WaPo investigation found.

DHS used footage from years ago, half the country away, or even in international waters, the Post found.
