African American veterans and their families and communities were essential to sustaining Black Civil War memory over the late 19th century and twentieth century. I discuss my own ancestor and others in Unforgettable Sacrifice. I proudly remembered them yesterday.

#tdih 1867, Reconstruction era Alabama delegates drafted a new state constitution, established first state-financed public schools in South.

By 1871, Black & white children attended public schools.

One professor said he canceled a class called “Politics and Poverty” because he was concerned about teaching topics that could be interpreted as violating the law.

Chapter submitted. It was my first exploring my Davidson campus history research for an edited volume on campus histories. My chapter focused on two men whose campus ties began in slavery and end with their death in the Jim Crow era. Can't wait for the feedback. #amwriting
