On this day in 1946, Viola Desmond's car broke down in New Glasgow, NS. She went to a movie and sat in a Whites-Only area. Her refusal to move helped spark the modern Canadian civil rights movement.

In a real life Fahrenheit 451 scenario, 36 copies of “Slaughterhouse-Five” were burned on order by Drake, ND’s school board. The board never read the book, but proceed anyways. Backlash ensued as the town was compared to Nazism.

When the Nazis came to power, Remarque left Germany for Switzerland; he lost his German citizenship, his books were burned, and his films banned. He went to the United States in 1938 and became a citizen in 1947. He later lived in Switzerland with his second wife, the actress Paulette Goddard. He died in September 1970.
