Alt-text is a written description of an image that helps blind or visually impaired users understand it. It’s read by screen readers and ensures content is accessible to everyone. When you upload an image there's an option to add it.

Text blocks that are justified are aligned to both left and right margins. The spaces between words can create "rivers of white" running down the page, which can make the text difficult to read for some people.

Do you want to use the exact same alt text each time a specific image is used? Not necessarily. Alt text must consider the context of the image and why it's being included on a site, post, article, etc. In other words, alt text depends on where you're including the image and why.

Intimidated by alt text?

If you were describing the pic to your friend who couldn’t see it, what would you say? You don’t need to paint a word portrait. Just explain the pic and relevant details/ context.

It's been around since the last millennium. It's a service to people using text-based browsers (mostly sight-impaired people these days), and not primarily a tool for amusement. Although it's OK to be facetious as long as you fulfil it's main purpose, which is describing what's in the image

If you're new here - and there are a lot of you - there is a culture at BlueSky and that means inclusivity. One of those things is to use Alt Text on your images.

Alt text is cool and it means you’re making your posts more accessible to the visually impaired.

Don’t make me give you the mom look.

It's beginning to look a lot like... 'image.'

This is the reality for screen reader users when alt text isn’t added. By describing your images (especially those snowy snaps!), you ensure that everyone can enjoy and be included.

If you're one of the folks who has told me you enjoy writing alt text, I encourage you to volunteer to help people who cannot write alt text, for whatever reason, and follow the Alt4Me feed.

There aren't enough volunteers to get through the volume of requests.

A SIMPLE GUIDE TO PROVIDING USEFUL ALT ON BLUESKY

1/ ALT's sole function on Bluesky is to provide an autonomous & as fully equivalent an experience of an image as possible for the blind/VI & neurodivergent

If you can see it & read it, I should be able to feel or hear it without leaving Bluesky
