Like them or not, I think it's pretty clear the campus protests *are* accomplishing things. Not always everything they want, not always what they intend, not always positive--but the idea that they're just impotent self-indulgent yelling is, I think, just not true.
The Visible Elbow of the Protests
Recently, I had occasion to reread Charles Tilly's article "Invisible Elbow."  Tilly's basic (oversimplified) thesis is that the "invisible ...

no one cares about what happens in HR, but he also just fired the head of HR, which is typically a sign that a whole lot of very dumb shit is about to go down.
okay, so, based on decisions they’ve made just this week, we can infer that tesla is giving up on:
- gigacasting
- model 2
- supercharger
- robotaxi
- roadster (lol)

which leaves… AI? *that’s* what’s trading at $180/share?
Two-step solution for the problem of Tesla's "innovative" manufacturing processes making cars hard to repair:

1. stop manufacturing
2. stop repairing

Hold two thoughts in your mind at the same time.

Pro-Palestinian speech, including academic speech as well as activism, has been uniquely suppressed, before & especially since 10/7, creating a widespread genuine sense that there's no reason to try to stay within institutionally-legitimate bounds.

what i hate? is the degree to which i find myself dwelling on these protests. metametaconversation, instead of talking about the plain facts on the ground--the need for peace and the fact that peace will not come until the palestinian right and need for self-determination is made real

Right-wing culture warriors' theory that radical leftists control academia and use it ruthlessly force left-wing beliefs on people was always insane. But it looks even crazier with administrations—the ones with the most power on campus—calling in police against left-wing protestors.
The New Right's Theory of Power is Insane
It is simply not true that radical leftists took over all major institutions and use them to crush the right, and mainstream figures should stop being afraid to say so

maybe having every on-air personality working off a background of "college students were rude to me once so I would like them brutalized by the state" is not giving us the most level-headed view of what's going on
Turned on CNN and it’s wild to see how much they’re creaming their jeans at the thought of cops brutalizing Columbia students. Entire coverage pushing unfounded conspiracy theories that the protesters aren’t even students, guests uniformly demanding the cops go in immediately, completely batshit

6th Cir. holds that bodycam video clearly contradicts officer's claim that suicidal man lunged at police before officer shot him five times with an M16 at close range, and it was clearly established that officer could not use deadly force on a man merely for disobeying police commands.

No QI.

Same here, that divesting from a broad mutual fund doesn’t really help or hurt or alter any relationship with a company, because you’re just as much more or less divesting from their competitors.
