There is no path towards Something New for the Seattle Mariners that is not teeming with agony, pain, and misery beyond imagining. The nation will watch in horror as this team gives painful birth to our beautiful and terrible abomination.

This is how it was always going to be.
In the light of day, the insistence on taking millions of fans into the yawning abyss of hell that is a 15-inning game seems pretty difficult to justify. What were the Mariners thinking?

Deep dive into the surge in US pedestrian deaths:

"It’s not that more pedestrians are getting hit by vehicles; it’s that the ones that are getting hit are more likely to die."

"[That] seems like fairly strong evidence for the theory that the rise in large SUVs is behind the uptick in ped deaths."
Why Are So Many Pedestrians Killed by Cars in the US?
It’s unfortunately not uncommon for pedestrians to be killed by cars in the US.

Why do right wingers hate autistic people so much? If someone wanted a child and that child turned out to be autistic, what kind of parent would find that disappointing, undesirable, and bad? These people need to fix their hearts before they try cosplaying as biomedical scientists.
Tylenol/autism stuff is bad for many reasons, but it will be used to push the idea that pregnant people shouldn't have pain relief. Women's pain is already dismissed.

Dear universities,

I am begging you to stop requiring letters of recommendation for master's programmes. You and I both know you don't read them, so stop asking for them.

Instead, have applicants list a name and get in touch if it's a borderline case.

Signed,
Everyone.

And one final thought: Ozzy going out after giving an emotional final performance that raised a ton of money for charity is more spiritually uplifting and did more genuine good than anything any televangelist and religious grifter who railed against him ever did combined.

Everyone is acting like US scientists will just go get science jobs elsewhere and sure some will but there are not anywhere close to enough science jobs elsewhere.

The end result of this will be much, much, much less science, not science happening in different places.
People are talking about the imminent brain drain of US researchers to other countries but that’s not the only way it’s going to look. There is going to be a brain drain out of science and into other US sectors. There are a lot of non-science things you can do with a Ph.D.

it’s wild to me that the culture war breaks this way.

Which is more macho:
1) get around under the power of your own manly muscles in a machine you can easily build and fix
2) carted around in a luxury armchair stapled to a room sized machine that runs on dinosaur juice and bottomless tax dollars
Here’s a good question — why is riding a bicycle in the city turning into [actually, being deliberately turned into] a culture war?

Read this @momentummag.bsky.social article.

It doesn’t need to be this way. It’s just smarter transportation that makes urban movement easier for EVERYONE.
Why is Riding a Bicycle in the City Turning Into a Culture War
Here are some key reasons why a safety and efficiency issue is turning into a bicycle culture war.

"The Rock" keep Sean Connery
Pick a national security movie or show and substitute the whole cast with Muppets except one.

"Sneakers" but keep Sidney Poitier (and alsoJames Earl Jones at the end).

We don't have to speculate what ending fluoridation of #water does. We've done the experiment, the results are clear. More childhood cavities and illnesses, higher medical costs, more pain for kids. The arguments to end it are based on bad or misleading science.

Two cities stopped adding fluoride to water. Science reveals what happened
As calls to end fluoride in water get louder, changes to the dental health of children in Calgary, Canada, and Juneau, Alaska, may provide a cautionary tale.
