My group's first ACS Catalysis paper came out today! We show that the most active known precatalyst for ester hydrogenation, a ruthenium(0) pincer complex, activates autocatalytically by catalyzing the hydrogenation of its ligand.

Autocatalytic Activation of a Ruthenium-PNN-Pincer Hydrogenation Catalyst
In this article, we describe a detailed experimental and computational study of the activation mechanism for a highly active pincer ruthenium(0) precatalyst for the hydrogenation of polar organic comp...

How many contact hours you get in GenChem?

We have 2.5 of lecture and this semester we finally created 1 hour recitations run by TAs. 3 hour labs. And here I am wondering if the reason other places seem to be able to cover more:

1) Lab is complementary rather than repetitive
2) More contact hours

Our group’s latest work is out today in @nature.com ! Our goal is to enable any chemist to be able to easily access an aryne intermediate! So Chris, Sal, and Felicia teamed up to design what we think is the ideal aryne precursor. Danny and @jnboyn.bsky.social helped us understand the activation!

Thank you @drjameschums.bsky.social! Turns out it's this option. I had seen that but assumed it was about standard valence as default, so thought I wanted it on. I did not!

Hi #chemsky, we are having lots of trouble acquiring methyl vinyl ketone. Several suppliers, @sigmaaldrich.bsky.social, @thermofishersci.bsky.social, claim that they have it, but they actually do not, and they claim they do not know when it will arrive from their supplier.

How common is it to make a six-membered ring with all different elements?
Our #ChemSciPicks this week is from Max Holthausen, Terrance Hadlington et al., who look at the path to an open-shell metallo-germylene and consider whether this proceeds via direct ligation, or reduction and metathesis.
