James C. Scott is cackling from beyond the grave
And here it is, my Joker moment.
I am insane now.

Anyone who happened to know that the White House would announce and then suspend tariffs within 24 hours just made a boatload of money.

“Why is Elon’s coup not on the front page of the New York Times???”

idk, probably because the NYT is a puzzle game app that happens to also release articles about how trans people aren’t real but are also somehow a menace. It’s like asking why there isn’t a sonnet printed on your toilet paper

turning up at the next legal academic conference with my laminated Wallet Inspector card, I reckon I'll do pretty well
To those skeptical of or upset by Ilan's claim that an "entire literature" supports the birthright citizenship order, the best response is to substantively engage w/ the claim & assume llan's good faith..While some have done this, I’m dismayed by the many ad hominem attacks on a respected colleague.
I very much get where this is coming from, but I think we should resist this framing. As long as they're acting with integrity (which we should presume unless proven otherwise), academics need to be given the space to pursue their ideas in good faith, wherever they lead. 🧵

If you take away one lesson from anything I've ever written, please let it be this:

You probably have too much respect for academia. You should probably have less.

sorta related, at one point a colleague told me about the concept 'communal narcissist' (someone who projects a not fully sincere pro-social disposition for very self-interested reasons) and so much of my experience in higher ed and NGOs made sense

The left’s opportunity in this moment is to paint a picture of the future that people can get excited about, that folks would sacrifice to build. This is partially the job of artists and writers, enough with the future-dystopian shit
one of the things about the Green New Deal era of US climate politics that I miss has to do with this - felt like there was a real sense that political energy could and should be devoted to building actual stuff. still on that team
i've been thinking lately about the loss of the future--not in the historical sense, because the future just keeps on coming--but the loss of the future in the ideological sense, the loss of the future as an organizing principle of politics

this is as true of liberals as it is of the left

There is another batch of bad abortion-related opsec advice going around, so I'm just going to link to Digital Defense Fund's guide to abortion privacy, which is realistic, practical, and explicit in its threat models: digitaldefensefund.org/ddf-guides/a...

Apropos of nothing, I happen to have the email address of someone who would be very interested in your thoughts on the matter, a Gary Hewett, warden at Wakulla Annex, at which this terrifying Nazi shit is going on. That's gary.hewett@fdc.myflorida.com. (h/t @phobus3000.bsky.social)
The FL Department of Corrections is attempting to "reverse" the gender identity of transgender people in its custody, referring to trans identities as "short-term delusions" and withholding hormone therapy. Reviving psychiatric theories of the 1950s, they blame trans identities on "childhood trauma"

Mainstream (ie non-academic) discussions of American history don’t get into it quite so much, but bombings were quite common, and assassinations, while not openly discussed, remain relatively common.

the vibes are good tho
There's a strange idea among moderates that radicals take far left positions for the vibes, or to posture, or just because they're radical position. We take these stances because we want a livable planet, we want people to have good lives, and because in many cases they're winning positions.
