As someone who's never really paid attention to the TGA's...

... it's wild *this* is how I find out there isn't a category for puzzle games, maybe one of *the* foundational genres of the medium. That's absurd.

By the way…

I throughly recommend the novel to anyone who wanted to get into old school noir, but found the casual misogyny and homophobia of The Maltese Falcon a bit much.

Laura’s very much the antidote.
I opted to take a wee break from gaming and read for a bit… and found myself reading Vera Caspary’s Laura.

There’s a line that strikes me as… harshly funny, with hindsight and inflation.

For an alibi, a suspect in a murder case went to a concert hall. He paid a whopping… 0.25¢, for a cheap seat.

Out of very grim curiosity-

What's the going rate for a cheap seat these days at... any concert show?

I suspect it ain't $0.25!
Said suspect treats this like a mark of shame, that a wealthy man like him should have fallen in such hard times.

Meanwhile, here I am, reading a noir novel from 1943, with a recession looming over our heads like the Swod of Damocles.

I daresay, reading back?

Dennis Wheatley‘s brand of paranoid racism could give Lovecraft’s more paranoiac brand a run for its money.

I cannot stress enough the biggest indication in Devil Rides Out, from the jump, that there’s “evil” afoot...
… did the sentence, “One of those bad blacks, I suspect,” bounce between the walls of my brain.

Oh, oh, man.

Then-

Cue the satanic cult made of seemingly every ethnicity under the rainbow, up to and including, “slit-eyed ageless Orientals.”

The colonial Britishness is strong with this one.

I was chatting with Dorian earlier and realized...

Oh, wow.

I haven't read that many new books this year. That is to say, novels published this past year. Everything I've read ranges from last year to, literally, well over two centuries ago.
So, so, so many horror novels with a strong start... and a terrible finish.
Any book made you go like this? (Can be figurative.)

Honestly this is very important

There is a very large and heavy handed brush in the "Player Autonomy" discussion that often sidelines the fact that while you are roleplaying a person it is still a group experience

More often than not having someone be an evil dick is gonna spoil their play time
being an evil murderhobo is kind of anathema to a good tabletop experience like 9 times out of 10

It really does feel like they're embarrassed by the edgy arthouse vibes of the original and want to distance themselves as far from it as possible. Replace it with this slick hi-def big budget blockbuster.

It is genuinely fascinating to see friends on multiple Discord servers, and on bsky in general, split down the middle about Dispatch. Some takes have been pretty measured ("Not a fan of its workcom vibe, I got enough of that from the MCU"), others, I feel, wildly disproportionate-

"It's AI drivel."
