Studio executives still do not understand that the internet is not real and for every person screaming into YouTube about continuity, there are dozens of ticket buying people who just want 60s surfer guitar, guns, stunts and bikinis and don’t care how it is reintroduced

From a distance it’s kind of heartbreaking to see people bind up so much of their hope for experience of the future, so much of their imagination, into a product which they do not actually own and must promote on the market. It’s like what sports fandom would be if teams fully dissolved after losing

This turns out to be an engine of anxiety bc the pretense that franchise canon is myth doubly sets the common malleability and internal vitality of true mythology / art against the marketplace’s demand that a thing prove itself or die

Spider Man hits, then Spider Man 2 is Actually A Reflection of 9/11. Then come the MCU and the third trilogy and the popular discourse is that these crowd pleasers are actually Culture Itself. Franchises are “modern myths”, essential expressions of humanity which require an essential respect

Which is not to say that Jackson’s films were perfect or without personality, but they were extremely *gratifying*. They were the first genre films to be legitimated as Important, which is to say the first films to legitimate genre, and thus grow it out of the shaggy and particular

Ha, right? That's why I loved it... and am continually baffled to find it listed as a "horror classic."
It's not horror! It isn't! Grim atmosphere does not a horror film make alone!

Sadly, unlike most other times the festival would have had live accompanying music in the tradition of silent film screenings, this restoration came with its own prepackaged music.
Ah, oh well.
Still, I loved it.
