Early November is a splendid time to visit Tbilisi. The harvest is in, incense smoke drifts through ancient churches, and my table is filled with barbecued meat, steamed dumplings and cheese-filled flatbread.

Wine or Sword? Kartlis Deda (“Mother of Georgians”) stands above Tbilisi’s old town, Sololaki. In her left hand a bowl of wine to greet those who come as friends, in her right hand a sword for those who come as enemies. Designed by prominent Georgian sculptor Elguja Amashukeli and erected in 1958

god this is properly mortifying stuff from Zarah there, GCSE-level analysis, quite hard to watch
We take no joy criticising a young left-wing UK political figure who has often spoken up for workers' rights and progressive causes. But these barely coherent comments from Zarah Sultana on Ukraine sum up much of what is wrong with her wing of the left www.instagram.com/reel/DQT62ys...

Very pleased to announce that I'm doing a new book with @atlanticbooks.bsky.social who did such a great job with the last one. Title TBC but it's about 'Wine and class from Petronius to Partridge'. Publishing autumn 2027. They're also taking on Empire of Booze following collapse of Unbound.

🇲🇩 Moldova, you’ve done it again.

No attempt to sow fear or division could break your resolve.

You made your choice clear:

Europe. Democracy. Freedom.

Our door is open. And we will stand with you every step of the way.

The future is yours.

Wild lettuce secretes a milky substance that was used in the 19th century as a sedative. It is sometimes known as “opium lettuce.”

And that’s why salads for lunch are dangerous.

Zeller Schwarze Katz (Black Cat) is a German vineyard region near Zell/Mosel. Legend says in 1863, when Aachen wine merchants couldn't choose between three barrels of winemaker Peter Anton, a black cat jumped on one and defended it fiercely. They bought that barrel.
