Coppicing season has begun. Structures around the cut stools are to (hopefully!) protect the regrowth from pesky deer

In the early hours of this morning, following 119.6mm of rainfall in 12hrs, the River Monnow burst its banks and flooded Monmouth. The usual river level is just under 2m, this morning it was 6.63m- even higher than the record-breaking level during the floods in 2020 (6.57m). Absolutely devastating.

Halley Research Station is open for business!

After a stop at Neumayer, serenaded with a horn farewell, the team reached Halley - only to find one door had reinvented itself as a wall… a wall of snow.

They’re melting it in tea urns for water and slowly getting the station ready for the season.

We need the rain - but preferably not all at once
Storm Claudia has arrived and a yellow rain warning is now in force across much of central/southern England and Wales ⚠️

Take care if you are about to travel as flooding and disruption are possible

Amber warnings will also come into force later today as the rain turns heavier

Boosted by Fohn effect no doubt, but still!
We are not ready for what's coming...

29.8°C in France mid November! 😱

These heat levels are just insane...🥵

You're telling me that there's a black ichor under the earth, made from the ancient dead, whose burning can realize all the dreams of man but only at the price of slowly returning the earth to its primordial state?

Landing at Wolf's Fang, a staging camp on the Antarctic continent 🇦🇶

The team are on the way to Halley Research Station on the Brunt Ice Shelf.

They were meant to get to Halley today, but weather on the rest of their route is causing delays. Not a bad view to wait with though, eh?

BBC news describing a graphic showing computer model wind field and track of hurricane Melissa (looks like it's lifted from Windy app) as a "satellite graph". C'mon guys, you've got experts in the weather centre you can ask.

On the dullest of late October days, the solar panels are still generating 1/3 of the power required to keep the heat pump ticking over to maintain the house at a comfortable 21C. The battery, charged up on cheap overnight rate, is providing the rest.

The eye wall of #Melissa is now moving onshore. It’s an extremely dangerous storm, having maintained its peak intensity of 175 mph, Gusts 215, and pressure of 901mb.
If it makes landfall at 900mb it would be a top three most intense landfalls in the Atlantic Basin.
My thoughts are with #Jamaica

Extra heat = extra power
...aaaand Melissa is now the strongest tropical cyclone ever measured in the satellite era.
