The monument for Elizabeth Benson, obit 1710, in St Leonard, Shoreditch. Carved by Francis Bird, it shows two gleeful skeletons holding a shroud, vigorously ripping apart the tree of life.

The solutions proposed for New Zealand's (and virtually every other country's) problems are always like:
"We need to make people work for more years"
"We have to cut back on services, I'm sorry, there is just no other way"
"We have to cut benefits for young people"

never:
"We need to tax the rich"

Foxtober 11th: Caramel Apple

Ok after an afternoon of results, texts, calls, messages on other apps and emails, I have some thoughts on today’s Local Election results

1) Voter turnout is depressing. 32%ish on average across AoNZ is pathetic.
2) The Māori Wards referendum should never have happened - it was a racebaiting farce…

No but I literally love being able to create things that only me and six other people will ever use.

Did it take too long? Yes.
Was it hard? Also yes.
Is it profitable? Absolutely not.
But was it worth it? Also yes.
I love when programmers go "here's the side-project I've been working on, it's a nexflorp library that scrumbles your beatmorps into typeslick"

hell yeah buddy, this is just for you and the 6 other people with your specific use case that will love this

So you attended and spoke at a memorial without doing *any* homework on the person? Like...none?
Didn't even put 3 minutes in to do a cursory scan of a wikipedia page?

Tonight me and my whānau got to see the official mayoral portrait done by Pōneke artist, Clark Roworth. This felt like a lovely end to this chapter with my mana intact and we will leave behind a progressive long term plan for the next council. I’m proud of of us 💚

Relatedly, it’s not smart that people who look at what generative AI actually does in the real world (including studies of cognitive offloading) are routinely described as “doomers,” while people who do nothing more than recycle AI sales hype are treated as experts on AI *and* everything it touches
If you don’t teach your students your subject, you’re not doing your job.

If you teach your students to ask AI first, you’re ensuring they’ll never be *needed* for any job.

You’re also guaranteeing that knowledge of your subject slowly dies.

Asking ChatGPT is gaining neither knowledge nor skills.
If you don’t teach your students how to use AI, you’re doing them a huge disservice because they won’t have jobs in the future.

So just to be clear, these businesses would be uneconomic if they had to pay for the cost of cleaning up the damage they are doing, and can't just leave it to ratepayers to fix?

And that is a bad thing?
