If the US takes away its conventional forces, then it's over for NATO as we know it.

One of the main reasons for those forces *in the first place* was to put enough American soldiers at risk so that the Kremlin would believe an U.S. president might actually push the Button.
It's not credible the US would fight a nuclear war over Europe if they aren't willing to contribute conventionally.

I think everyone in the EU ought to read that book. VERY UNFORTUNATELY, it is far too realistic and plausible for comfort.

It is not IMHO the most probable scenario. But it is now too probable to ignore.
