Well, as the world's smallest 'trusted elite' let me take this opportunity to reiterate to whoever is listening: Hegseth is deeply unfit in multiple ways. His ideology is disqualifying, his alcoholism is disqualifying, his lack of skill and expertise is disqualifying and, oh yes, he raped a woman.
Public opinion is mostly not people deciding what they think on their own. It's mostly regular people taking cues from trusted elites, often overcoming their first impression.
Hegseth gaining support among Republicans is because right-wing elites are defending him. Similar shift happened re: Jan. 6.
