At #Christmas we tell the truth:

“Whichever way you look at it, you can’t reach the potential of cycling without making it much more safe and hospitable to cycle. It all comes down to that basic fact.”

Cycling is changing at speed – but is Britain keeping pace?
Emulating the bike-friendly highways enjoyed by our continental neighbours will take a lot more money and political will

“Scooters and cycles regularly ride on pavements and, because of electrification, they can go at high speeds, up to 70 miles per hour, according to the Sunday Telegraph”

Two solutions:

1. Close the Telegraph.
2. Mandatory dementia tests for peers.
“Arrogant” cyclists riding at 70mph are ignoring police and making pavements “as dangerous as the road”, House of Lords told
During a debate on the Crime and Policing Bill, former Met Police head Lord Hogan-Howe reiterated his calls for bike number plates, while other peers claimed that the “threat” had shifted from “Lycra ...

over the last 6 months i have been yelled at by people in cars for nothing beyond being a person on a bike. i wasn’t “in their way,” i wasn’t forcing them to alter their behavior; i wasn’t acting like a “scofflaw.” i think there is a growing hostility abroad toward cyclists and it really worries me

We have actually got to the point where we need a national media campaign on how to behave as a socially responsible and acceptable person
This faced me walking to the bus stop the other night. Quite special, even for around here.

If you looking at @ollyglover.bsky.social ‘s survey - “what matters to you?”. This Olly. #pavementparking that’s out of control in #Didcot. One year and we can’t see change. Just more cars. But yeah, let’s fix the potholes for them? @badlyparkedox.bsky.social @oxfordclarion.bsky.social

Just had the @ollyglover.bsky.social questionnaire through. Brave question being asked, the reply will (based on the last year of no change) @greenparty.org.uk ? Doesn’t mention #activetravel as on option important to you either? #saveDidcot

Crucially, those looking to invest in potential car-replacing electric bikes can relax as a touted reintroduction of a cap on the Cycle to Work scheme never materialised in the Autumn Budget. Hit the link in comments for the full story.

Strong start. They must be emulating GWR from the start 😊
Chiltern Railways has confirmed Oxford to Milton Keynes services will not start this year. The delay, first reported by the Clarion in September, has been picked up by national media this week. Chiltern says “We understand this will be disappointing to people looking forward to using the new route.”

If we are ever going to have a real road safety strategy we need to publish the consultation on #pavementparking and take it seriously. @ollyglover.bsky.social
Road collisions should not be viewed as inevitable. Today I pushed the Government to use the internationally recognised Safe System principles, grounded in harm reduction, as it develops a new road safety strategy.

They just seem to be fiddling at the edges and avoiding the big issues.

We are floating the removal of the ONLY tax break on cycles. (Yes, it’s imperfect, yes it misses out the chunk of population that don’t pay income tax).

We are definitely not going to restore the fuel tax on petrol to where it should be.

Remind me again why I voted for you?

Think a lot of cyclists in Oxford and Oxfordshire are delighted with this.

We may now get Road Safety back on the agenda with TVP and a police force that actually listens, and cares.

“Cycle to Work should be about helping ordinary commuters switch to greener travel, not giving tax breaks to high earners buying £4,000 e-bikes for weekend rides in the Surrey Hills”.

To the contrary, £4k can get a young family out of a car and onto a cargo bike in a cycle lane.

Axing the cycle-to-work scheme might seem like low-hanging fruit for a cash-strapped Treasury, but it would be a big mistake. Particularly with expensive kid-carrying cargo e-bikes, it's one of the most effective modal shift levers out there.

It's amazing how much of a difference the congestion charge in Oxford has made. The roads are much quieter, it's so easy driving around the city centre now and being able to keep to time. My job has become less stressful.

Is it wrong to set up a crowd funding to buy @nathanley.com a house in #Didcot, to have half a chance of change?

Appreciate David R has tried now for a long time 😊
I just find it such a depressing and unambitious thing to say. As if our population is *that* unhealthy it’s so unthinkable they might cycle

It just needs some imagination (and leading by example) to shake people from the inertia, or at least highlight excuse making when we see it…

My swim squad has started communicating on Facebook, so I’ve had to activate my account.

I’ve never been so depressed by the Councillors for Didcot.

Apparently we need more roads, remove the one bus gate and they voted against the congestion charge.

We deserve more. #Didcot needs more.

I don't need the flying taxi because the fact they're using government funds for this bullshit instead of active and public transport is enough to send me into orbit.
Flying electric taxis will be travelling between Oxford and Cambridge next year. A six-month pilot project (geddit) aims to prepare the infrastructure and develop a business case as a first step towards “commercially viable regional operations”.

Good to see that one year on:

Didcot gridlocked with cars ✅
Dangerous as ever to cycle ✅
Pavement parking out of control ✅
GWR trains expensive & late ✅

But it’s okay; once Olly gets promoted we may see some change. Starting to feel it was a wasted vote & the change promised isn’t coming #didcot
