A new AAUP Report on faculty senates is out! 📝

As political attacks on faculty governing bodies increase, our new report argues that effective shared governance requires that faculty have a strong, distinctive & representative collective voice to safeguard academic freedom.

Read below 👇
In Defense of an Independent and Representative Faculty Voice: The Case of Faculty Senates
This report, prepared by a subcommittee of the AAUP’s Committee on College and University Governance, reexamines the necessity of strong faculty senates through the lens of the Statement on Government of Colleges and Universities and other AAUP statements and in light of escalating political interference against shared governance.

Something you could also argue (with a few obvious caveats) about journalism. Newspapers were broadly viewed as conservative until the mid-60s, when George Wallace pioneered a strategy of “it’s not me, it’s them” when the (conservative) newspapers of Alabama had had enough of him.

“Iowa City eliminated bus fares in August 2023 with a goal of lowering emissions… The two-year pilot program proved so popular that the City Council voted this summer to extend it another year, paying for it with a 1% increase in utility taxes and by doubling most public parking rates to $2 from $1”

Assume all the yes and no votes from Dem senators are strategic and not sincere votes. The party caucus made a decision. No way to know how many were in favor. Then the caucus decided who would vote yes and no based on what would protect each of them politically the most. That’s how this works.
