The Hive Mind shares one overwhelming belief, downstream from which all other behaviors flow: COVID is harmless. If that foundational belief shatters- the central tentpole of back to normal which has been supporting a fantasy world since 2021-2022- everything else must be rebuilt from the ground up. It is, as some have put it, a “load bearing delusion.” But it’s not the first, only, or last load-bearing delusion our society runs on, and that’s why it doesn’t surprise me that Gilligan could write a show so closely matching my experience while not necessarily thinking of my life with Long COVID at all. The idea that we continue burning fossil fuels the way we are- that we can continue expanding fossil fuel infrastructure- that’s a load bearing delusion. Nothing that anyone in government is doing matches anything near the scale of the crisis, and yet everyone walks around grinning and flying and partying like there’s no tomorrow. Hell, there might not be! Capitalism, unchecked growth and consumption on a planet with finite resources, will lead to a middle-class American lifestyle for all before the world is scorched: load bearing delusion. Poor countries are poor because of bad governance, not because of decades of neocolonial pillage and foreign resource control by the first world: load bearing delusion. I could go on. And for me it’s interesting because, when I hear the words, “back to normal,”- back to normal in the context of COVID, of the lockdowns, of the pandemic, I also hear them in regard to every single one of those other load bearing delusions just listed. “Back to normal” was never just about forcing you to accept that life was going to be worse from now on, and you better not think about fighting back. You better not demand paid sick leave for the many more days a year you’ll be out sick. You better not ask for legal protections since this new virus might end up disabling you at work. You better not ask for clean air or far UVC. You better not even ask for COVID tests that consistently work.

Q: So I wonder what you think about that, about the phrase “globalize the intifada” and what we've seen as some anti-semitism coming from the left-wing protesters. A: The first thing as you were saying is anti-semitism is a real issue in our city and it's one that can be captured in statistics, the ones that you're citing. It's also one that you will feel in conversations you have with Jewish New Yorkers across the city. And I remember one conversation I had with a friend of mine after the horrific war crime of October 7th. He was telling me that he went for Shabbat services at his temple and he was facing forward when he heard the door open. And he turned back with a chill going up his spine because he didn't know who was coming in. And that's more than a year ago. And then just a few weeks ago, I had a conversation with a Jewish man in Williamsburg who told me that the same door he would keep unlocked for decades is one that he now locks out of a fear of what could happen in his own neighborhood. And I think that this is something that has to be the focus of the next mayoral administration, is not just talking about it, but tackling it. And these are the conversations that have informed our commitment around increasing funding for anti-hate crime programming by 800% in our Department of Community Safety. To the question of language that's being used. I am someone who I would say am less comfortable with the idea of banning the use of certain words and that I think it is more evocative of a Trump style approach to how to lead a country. And- Q: Does that just make you uncomfortable? Like the phrase globalizing intifada. And like the phrase from the river to the sea, does that make you uncomfortable? Or do you think- A: Okay, those are different. Those are super different. Q: They're not really. A: Those are like different genres. Q: I'm sorry, I'm asking so wrong. Then they're not really different to me. And to some people they are not different. A: I know people for whom those things mean very different things. And to me, ultimately, what I hear in so many is a desperate desire for equality and equal rights in standing up for Palestinian human rights. And I think what's difficult also is that the very word has been used by the Holocaust Museum when translating the Warsaw ghetto uprising into Arabic because it's a word that means struggle. And as a Muslim man who grew up post-911, I'm all too familiar in the way in which Arabic words can be twisted, can be distorted, can be used to justify any kind of meaning. And I think that's where it leaves me with a sense that what we need to do is focus on keeping Jewish New Yorkers safe. And the question of the permissibility of language is something that I haven't ventured.

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

On a Nature news article reporting that NIH planned to suspend subawards for foreign collaborations: "No, that's false. There's going to be a policy on tracking subawards. The NIH and the government should be able to see where the money's going." "I'm really uncomfortable with this conversation, because you're like, actually spreading rumors that you don't know anything about. ... Nature also is spreading rumors. Halt foreign collaborations, that's not true." "We're working on the policy, Jocelyn. You shouldn't be reporting rumors. I know there's leaks all over here, but the leaks don't actually reflect what's happening. Don't write about rumors. It actually makes the things that you and I care about worse. It’s time to stop ignoring the hypocrisy in wearing a big gold cross while announcing the defunding of children’s cancer research… Autistic kids and adults who are loving contributors to our society don’t deserve to be stigmatized by a weird nepo baby who once stashed a dead bear in his car. Our military service members don’t deserve to be told by a washed-up Fox TV commentator, who drank too much before being appointed Secretary of Defense, that they can’t serve their country simply because they are Black, gay, or a woman.
