Pete Hegseth is Secretary of Defense *because* he championed war criminals. Literal war criminals convicted of heinous offenses in US courts martial. Got Trump to pardon some in term 1.

Not in spite of, because.

That's what Trump appointed, and what 50 GOP Senators (plus Vance) voted to confirm.

The Myth of a Rightward Realignment

Let’s discard some stubborn misconceptions about Trump’s support and what happened in the 2024 election. They are only obscuring our understanding of a profound de-alignment.

As the piece is partially behind a paywall, I’ll share some key thoughts:

So by trying to keep every generation of voters informed what's going on, it's "sucking up to the parents"? Which generation reliably votes? What policies are generation specific in a good administration? Not a lot, actually. This is illuminating, but not as you two think it is.
I was watching Adam Friedland's interview with Zohran and he said "you're the first one who is one of Our Guys" and then he said "well, Mayor Pete, but he's really one of the people our age who is trying to suck up to the parents" and it was an incredibly illuminating thought!

We have entire National Conversations™️ about how The Democrats are Alienating Real Folkz with Funny Words like “oligarchy,” & so they Must Do An Abundance of Popularism & Stop Talking like they’re in The Faculty Lounge. Trump does this <all the time>, no one in the media or GOP blinks, & 🤷‍♂️🤡.

Look at these men. They are ashamed of themselves as they should be. They are standing here while the president calls their professional colleague a “stupid person.”

I don’t care if you think you’ll lose access. You need to speak up. Decent Americans are tired of this and disgusted with all of you.

Just a reminder to everyone. Trump is not the USA. Trump is not the Constitution. Trump doesn’t believe in the Rule if Law. Trump does not serve the American people. Trump is a corrupt leader of the US govt but he’s not the govt. Trump is not and will never be permanent.

I’ll spare you the rest of Trump’s statement where he calls Tim Waltz the R-word & hate mongers immigrants—

On a day meant for gratitude, he ranted about “vermin,” & vengeance. It’s the clearest reminder yet — there is no moral bottom too low or autocratic line he won’t cross

this is accurate, additionally: he does not think his job is “be president,” he thinks his job is to speak to his fans

because that is the routine his Swiss cheese brain knows how to run

he considers anyone speaking to him who is not a fan to be a heckler interrupting his performance
The fundamental thing to understand about this administration is the president is a grumpy retiree. He has no interest in working anymore. Which leads to him being pissed that he is getting asked a question, pissed he has to show up and work, the scheming viziers running the show, etc..

Our information space is dominated by a system that demands and rewards continous and immediate emotional gratification, so you can't even begin to have a discussion about complex issues. It's a bright cancer that spreads and multiplies with every interaction.
It's part of the electionification of everything, which is why we as a country are failing to have a proper conversation about our actual problems. It's bad for the left *and* the right.
It's such a bizarre framing. Labour MPs think taking 450k kids out of poverty is putting the country first! That's why they wanted it to happen! It's not because they personally benefit.
