insane that you *used to be* able to take an electric train from Seattle to Portland and now such a thing is essentially unthinkable
This postcard of an Oregon Electric train leaving Salem for Portland is often dated to 1908 (with some even saying it depicts the start of service in January of that year), but there's one detail that makes me pretty certain it's from after 1910. Any guesses?

One more thing. When I wrote about this study showing one-third of Americans don't drive, people were messaging me saying this cannot be true for LA.

In LA County *23 percent* of the population is under 16. Kids are people! We must plan for their movement, just like all nondrivers. Hope that helps!
Highly recommend diving into NRDC's study on car access, which @keawilson.bsky.social wrote about here: usa.streetsblog.org/2025/10/02/report-16-million-have-no-car-access-at-all

Where Nadir was killed, 14% of LA households are car-free. But the infrastructure does not match that reality

Just thinking again how Democrats asked people to accept short-term suffering in order to give space to prevent long-term, worse suffering and then said, "Thanks for suffering in the short-term. You'll get to suffer long-term too so that our Thanksgiving plans don't get disrupted."

BTW, a 2021 Carnie Mellon study found that ridehail's arrival in a new city *increases* car ownership.

The reason: Few residents ditch their car, while some become ridehail drivers and buy vehicles.

Anyone want some perfectly fine crate and barrel glasses?

They don’t go with our new plates so they’ve gotta go.

I’ve also got an assortment of utensils.

If you don’t mind weird clay stuff. I’ve got four mugs as well, 3 bowls, 2 small plates, and 3 big plates.

They’re not going to comply with court orders, and IF federal judges start holding officials in contempt to the point they’re actually charged with it and prosecuted, they’re likely just going to receive pardons.

Portland is now allowing single stair apartment buildings up to 4 stories, per the 2025 building code... with a giant caveat www.portland.gov/ppd/commerci...
City building, fire officials establish guidelines for new single-stair apartment buildings
This allowance supports the development of new multifamily housing units on smaller lots while not compromising the safety of residents when evacuating a building during a fire.
