age verification is functionally a huge security hazard for _all_ internet users but the government will call you a danger to children if you point this out
“In October, one of Discord’s former third-party vendors suffered a data breach that exposed users’ age verification data, including images of government IDs.”

Also do notice, these two Supreme Court decisions dropped the *same day*:

- States can restrict online speech if it is "adult".
- The mere depiction of homosexual existence can be objectionable adult content.

A plus B equals C
Alito includes screenshots from the books he thinks parents should be able to bar schools from letting their children read.

it drives you insane how much erosion of freedom is justified by concern for kids when the people who actually hurt them will never face consequences

Hey @stoat.chat, is there any path for moving data from a hosted to self-hosted community? Like, if my friends and I set up a stoat community, can we take our community to a self-hosted server later?

I assume not, but it's worth checking, because it'd be awesome.

I'm sorry that it's inconvenient and annoying but at some point people have to realize that "let's all rely on that one service run by one commercial company" will always lead to the same problems like with Discord right now, especially for marginalized people.

By the way, we told you this would happen. I've been saying this would happen for a fucking decade. You need to listen to us crazy open source fanatics because we're always eventually right.

Suddenly, some Bluesky people care about horizontal decentralization (that is, across multiple providers of the same service) only when Blacksky puts out a feature that is "decentralized" the same way the rest of the network is- vertically, which is to say "not."

Nice double standard there.

Can anyone fill me in on what happened with Link?

Y'know I realized what else has been bothering me about ATProto. One of the big advantages people tout is the ability to create and own your own identity provider without being beholden to some big company. Ignoring the issues with the PLc registry, this is actually a great idea...

Its really like. "I can't believe you free software folks who use copyright as a weapon against big companies, accept degraded quality of service to avoid giving big companies power over you, use old computers to avoid having to use software you don't trust, and are largely broke, ...

For the record I completely agree with this. It's fine to make things that are centralized; my quarrel with Bluesky is that it lies about its centralization. Blacksky isn't doing that here.
They’re also forgetting that decentralization has no value on its own. The purpose of decentralization is *against* oppressive structures. If a community agrees on an implementation that works for the community, that’s good for them!

The protocol is not more important than the people.

A small but very deep thing that bothers me about generative AI as a shortcut to practice and work and skill is the basic assumption that it’s impossible to take pleasure in a creative pursuit that you aren’t very good at and I assure you that is not the case

The Caleb Hammer meltdown over a total of like, 4 very valid criticisms from D'Angelo would be extremely funny if it didn't involve him calling D'Angelo slurs for _four entire hours_ on a live stream

I want everyone who has spent years in therapy wondering what is wrong with them, wondering why they had so many bad relationships, why they felt so much dread, to know that it was in part because you were living in a world run by evil, evil people and you could tell that somewhere deep down

I for one am deeply grateful that D'Angelo is talking about how awful Caleb Hammer is. The Financial Audit is a vehicle for regressive rhetoric that happens to include making fun of people for being bad with money.
