I feel like I forget to talk about it but here's a reminder that I have a comic coming next year called Last Ship to Mars 🚀 that is not even a little concerned about Mars and is instead a love letter to the Earth and the huge importance of staying and doing the work. It's also gay. ✨

I'm still waiting for a Blu-ray release of "Coo of the Far Seas" (1993).
There is an HD master, but it's only broadcast on television in Japan occasionally.

Every year around Thanksgiving, I see tons of grad students post heartbreaking messages on social media about how their loved ones don’t understand or support their decision to study what seems like something pointless or silly.

Perhaps my American Scientist essay can help!

“Why Are We Funding This?”
Long-standing myths about “silly science” have contributed to the reckless slashing of government-supported research.

Writing about people donating trash is — and I kid you not — the only thing (so far) to almost get me fired. White people were LIVID. And organized to get my university fired for it.

This is the holy grail of whiteness, patriarchy, and capitalism in some surprising ways.

Bless that prof!
I had a womens studies professor try to coax a class to understand that it’s not ’wrong’ for an alcoholic homeless person to take your change you tossed and spend it on alcohol. People were livid lol. It really changed my perspective on giving. its freeing to give without expectation.

Hey @bsky.app @safety.bsky.app @support.bsky.team please unsuspend Goran immediately.

Goran is a great person, a great artist, and the whole anti-Palestine thing youre on is one of those "Ford funding Hitler" disasters you remember being shocked and dismayed by when you learned of in middle school.

Bluesky not addictive to teens but definitely a crutch for elder millennials who know too much about the Bajoran war.

Meta, YouTube, TikTok and Snapchat know how addictive their platforms can be to teens.

Those are allegations a group of school districts is making against the social media giants, according to a newly unsealed legal filing that quotes the companies’ own internal documents. https://cnn.it/3Xjq5x5

I feel like the frequent banning of people for completely bullshit, misguided reasons on a website populated by adult tech-weary lefties is a great way to drive down engagement and I wish they would stop because I don’t really want to feed my art directly into the woodchipper that is instagram

I have things I want to buy on itchio but they ONLY take PayPal these days it seems and I don’t have a PayPal anymore and I have zero interest in setting up a new PayPal account in 2025. I just want to support the arts!!!

A lot of folks I know (& formerly myself) follow the IG account mentioned in quoted post thread below.

Margaux also offers some additional points on spotting scraped art accounts.
Finding another "AI" artist on Instagram (who is lying), with more than 80k followers.

How to verify this is AI?
- post every day and sometimes the same illustration with three propositions (midjourney)
- incoherences in the background
- differents art style in the past
- account created after 2022

I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

Hey, if you used to have Harry Potter soundtrack music on your holiday playlist because it fits that vibe so well, but now it makes you feel mighty icky, might I suggest grabbing some tracks from Williams' similar soundtrack for HOOK, especially "The Never-Feast"?

I put this up for sale early cause I came back to like a zillion notifications and I have no job right now, buy my comic! It's made by a human who loves making comics out of spite, this is the second in my unofficial spite series. The first was a comic about learning to write HTML to spite one guy.
If you would like to read the rest of this 40-page comic, BRAINS, you can snag it from itch for $10, I just put it up in my shop. It will also be available in print at MICE (micexpo.org) in December, where each one will have a hand-drawn custom illustration at the back of the book on the last page.

Watched the new Defunctland yesterday and there’s a bit where they going into the robotics and interactive AI research being done in universities and it strikes me how much an actually very interesting and valuable field has been thoroughly poisoned by tech bros with no scientific curiosity

Still one of the things I'm proudest of writing.

Forget your stereotypes about medieval peasants, y'all. The truth is so, so much more interesting.
Hello #medievalsky here's my novella-length look at how peasants facing feudalism organized and fought.

Ambushes, secret societies, communal pacts, innovative weaponry, ingenious battle tactics and a whole heap of dead nobles:

This is so cool, and undeniably powerful. I'm sure it gets talked about a lot among organizers, but it seems like creatively finding ways to use the tools of capitalism more directly against them has a lot of potential. It's so easy for them to ignore or weather a classic protest or boycott.
In Monrovia, California, protesters are purchasing 17¢ ICE scrapers from Home Depot and immediately returning them to create long lines and slow down the entire store. Their aim is to disrupt sales and convey a message opposing ICE raids occurring in their neighborhood.
