Hailey is being generous with "thinly veiled." One thing that is very apparent on this website is that most people don't have principles until those principles are things that can be wielded to bash perceived (or actual) ideological opponents.
its interesting (derogatory) that every time amanda askell gets talked about on this website the thinly veiled misogyny comes out in force

Suppose also that after a while I get so good at following the instructions for manipulating the Chinese symbols and the programmers get so good at writing the programs that from the external point of...

eboshi is a banging example of a very underrated character archetype: person who is caring and brave and right about everything (ie correctly interprets everything they can see), but whose desire to overcome all limitations combined with their affinity for violence leads them to take wrong actions

side note: it's odd to me that people on both sides of this equation are so fixated on the concept of AGI / consciousness/ etc... even if AGI is never achieved, the level of usefulness and effectiveness that today's AI technology presents is already way more than "enough" to produce serious effects

most people seem incapable of understanding that all 3 of these things are true at the same time:

1. AI is useful, incredibly useful
2. AI companies should be regulated
3. Our current government won’t do that

Do I know any devops / cloud infrastructure folks open to consulting right now? Small team just had an unexpected departure.

jj is super powerful if you need it, but tbh I think the pitch is even stronger for non-power users. In 6 months of regular use I've never needed to consult the Deep Tomes to unfuck a repo, and the only time I ended up remotely off the happy path it was a limitation of the underlying VCS, not jj

This is the power of user interviews and extensive user testing across the spectrum of experience levels. Git never went through this process

competitive advantage for the LLM era: went insane reading Blindsight a decade ago; confronted the fact that much of what we value as intelligence can be decomposed into component submodules; accepted that sentience/consciousness was not a precondition of effectiveness wrt many cognitive tasks, etc
