it went with adopting glibc, which had the new ELF dynamic linker (the kernel only knows how to load static ELF binaries or pass control to the interpreter named in the ELF program header, usually ld-linux.so)

they removed the last support from kernel 5.19; the switchover I'm thinking of was back in the 1.2 series IIRC, which was roughly when Linux got shared libraries that worked
