ever curious why people that work in safety-critical systems want to use Rust?

here's the title slide for the talk i'll give at @rustnationuk.bsky.social about this

living right between nyc and boston was surreal because on one hand, trains exist, and on the other, it costs as much to go from New Haven to Boston as it does from Paris to Berlin

okay for Austin people. this is sorta like, both in distance and in population, a train to Hutto.
sorry, scratch that: 25,000 people for the original destination, 76,000 for the change of plans

for context, europeans, the closest "real" city to me has a single train daily. it has 1.5 million people. ~130km.

listen having your travel disrupted absolutely sucks www.theocharis.dev/blog/kidnapp...

at the same time, i also wish that like, i could expect a train to a town of 76,000 to exist at all

hey so, the mac m5 is a BEAST. like, I didn't actually notice this process running:

> Both runaway processes are now gone. Your CPU should feel much lighter now - that old one from Dec 19th was burning 95% CPU for nearly 4 days!

it wasn't until a second runaway test executable showed up that i did

somebody today: "why do people use abbreviations without defining them? I've been a dev for 15 years and I've never heard <abbv>"

me: "oh god <abbv> is from 1999 which is a decade older than that"

low stakes posting today reminds me that 1) Facebook is for talking to people you know IRL but don’t like and 2) microblogging sites are for talking to people you don’t know but do like.

we forget these things at our peril

Everything is like this now. On every subject, the only acceptable opinion is that things are the worst they’ve ever been, and there’s no room for anyone to acknowledge anything good without to-be-sure caveats about other things that are bad
Truly impossible levels of cynicism when it comes to the MTA. In the comments about the new faregates, people are complaining about the service on the 4/5, which come every 2 minutes. We can literally never be happy.
