And you can see how I never really felt in community with boys or men. It was the class I was compulsorily sorted into, but not one I had any attachment to, nor did I (nor really could I) take advantage of the benefits except by accident when some of my natural inclinations sort of aligned. Where I chafed, it was in many of the same ways that my mom (brilliant, stubborn, and opinionated) in retrospect clearly chafed against her own cultural programming, which she also pushed onto me. There's an angle here where my mom saw something in me she recognized intuitively but didn't have a good name for, and it made her scared for my sake, and so she tried to equip me as best she knew how for how to handle it. And in some ways I like that narrative in part because it makes her struggle to accept me of a piece with internal struggles around her own relationship with her sex/gender and how society treats women, rather than just bigotry leading her to torpedo her relationship with her eldest child rather than repair it, when they wanted and needed her love and acceptance the most.

ATmosphere Report - #144 Laurens@laurenshof.online View on Leaflet ↗ Eurosky Live All the sessions of last week's Eurosky Live conference in Berlin are now available online, here. One main takeaway I've heard repeatedly: the event effectively demonstrated that atproto is more than Bluesky. From conversations with policy professionals working to reduce Big Tech's power over social networking, a key hesitation has been whether atproto is too closely tied to a single US VC-funded startup. The conference combined both policy-focused discussions, as well as more tech and product demos. This combination was effective at showing the policy community that atproto is more than just Bluesky and microblogging, and that people are working on the ecosystem from multiple angles: building sovereign platforms (Gander, Northsky), combining multiple protocols (Sill, the reader client which combines both Bluesky and Mastodon was effective for this) as well as expanding drastically what open protocols can do (social coding with Tangled). This made Eurosky an effective trust-building exercise for alleviating some of the concerns that the ATmosphere is more than just Bluesky. I will say, for as much as I was fighting with my own editor on this one, some stuff around paragraphs got messed up with a certain CSS change that fixes a major bug in the editor in Chrome, I *do* love how the overall layout looks, especially the new stuff, and I'm pretty happy with the typography.

this is one area where the editing and publish formatting (in the current hybrid editor) will diverge for usability. need to make a preview button. also a raw text editor option

The Blogosphere I am an atheist in large part because of a blog called Common Sense Atheism.The author, Luke Muehlhauser, was criticising both Richard Dawkins and some Christian apologetics I was familiar with. Luke's blog was part of a cluster of blogs out of which grew the rationalists, one of, for better or for worse, the most influential intellectual movements of the 21st century.I also read blogs like boingboing.net, was a big fan of Cory Doctorow. I figured out I am trans in part because of Thing of Things,Specifically their piece on the cluster structure of genderspace. a blog by Ozy Frantz, a transmasc person in the broader rationalist and Effective Altruist blogosphere.One thing these all have in common is length. Part of the reason I only really got onto Twitter in 2020 or so was because the concept of microblogging, of having to fit your thoughts into such a small package, baffled me for ages.Amusingly I now think that being on Twitter and now Bluesky made me a better writer. Restrictions breed creativity, after all. On Platform Decay Through all of this I was never really satisfied with the options that were out there for long-form writing. Wordpress required too much setup. Tumblr's system for comments remains insane. Hosting my own seemed like too much money to burn on something nobody might read. But at the same time, Substack's success proves that there is very much a desire for long-form writing, enough that people will pay for it, and that investors will back it. There are thoughts and forms of writing that you simply cannot fit into a post or even a thread of posts. Plus, I'm loathe to enable a centralised platform like Substack where the owners are unfortunately friendly to fascists.I am very much a fan of freedom of expression.
