I love the ~idea~ of being able to interact with a character and get something truly novel and unexpected out of the experience. Like, it ~would~ be neat to go to Westworld and get lost in the 'realness' of the characters, try to push the systems to build an adventure.

But LLMs can't do that
Essentially, I think that LLM-generated dialogue only makes sense if you believe that the product of writing is words.

But the product of writing isn't words, any more than the product of justice is prisoners, or the product of love is weddings. The product of writing is meaning.
I had five fascinating conversations for this RPS piece, gathering perspectives on genAI chatbots in games, as seen in Where Winds Meet. Thanks to @meghna.bsky.social, @pyrofoux.bsky.social, @maxkreminski.bsky.social, and @chrisgardiner.bsky.social www.rockpapershotgun.com/horrible-bor...

"they will be, one day"

no, they won't, any more than tires can help you fly. They're not built for that. They're a fundamentally different technology. An LLM does not exist to model conscious thought, it exists to take advantage of your willingness to see faces in things that aren't there.

More people need to follow Katie because she is cursed to draw breathtaking west coast inspired landscapes that are home to the most lovely dragons.

And with traditional mediums no less.

You're very much an inspiration to me, @kamakru.bsky.social. <3
Hello new followers, welcome! A quick intro of me:
Hi, I'm a full time fantasy artist in the PNW with heavy focus on dragons, landscapes and sometimes animals, usually birds. I work in watercolor and gouache mostly but will do lino cuts and some sketches and ink.

It's truly remarkable how there will be news organizations and journalists who correctly identify that RFK is a menace and that HHS can't e trusted when he pushes stuff about vaccines or Tylenol causing autism... but cover the anti-trans stuff like "Well, HHS says so, and we should trust HHS!"
Trans youth healthcare is based in decades of research and supported by every major medical organization in the US. Under RFK Jr, a handpicked panel produced a dodgy report claiming otherwise.

It's a clear example of Kennedy's war on science. So why aren't news organizations treating it that way?
The Neglected Front in RFK Jr.’s War on Science — Assigned
As trans healthcare is decimated no one is standing up for the integrity of the scientific process for these patients.

“In a Bloomberg interview, Vincke admitted that Larian has been pushing generative AI internally, even though it hasn't led to gains in efficiency or speed.”

The “need” to rush into AI adoption is executive peer pressure. It is the ideology of business leadership triumphing over data and people.

I'm so lost on Swen's (Larian CEO) doubling down on using ChatGPT for powerpoints and pre-production concepting despite A) admitting it adds no value to the pipeline and B) having no shareholder interests pressing down on him. Literally just seems like he got grifted and this is sunk cost phallacy

"I refuse." This is it. There's no reason we should accept a narrative of an already settled future which marginalizes humans and individual agency. No one wants this. No one asked for it.
"This promise of an AI future, is really just a collective anxiety that wealthy people have about how well they're gonna be able to control us in the future."

- @tressiemcphd.bsky.social with an absolute mic drop moment about AI bullshit.

Incredible words.

I'm pretty sure that at this point in time, the remaining opposition to renewables are nothing but the tantrums of those with interest in fossil fuels and/or could not get the logic of "there's no cost to obtaining the fuel" to sink into the brain.

So the guy himself is saying they arent really even seeing productivity gains? He said they are just using AI because they are afraid of being left behind. He is inviting this public scorn by repeating techbro talking points for no benefit at all. The mind of a CEO is fascinating.
If I had known the two paragraphs about genAI in my article today would be so controversial, I would have expanded them a bit! Here's a rough transcript of the relevant portion of my interview with Swen Vincke, so everyone has all the context. (Full article here: www.bloomberg.com/news/newslet...)

The Palia beta literally had unreal mannequins as NPC placeholders! This is good for development! You do not want overly rendered placeholders, it completely hurts the foundation evaluation of your game. Grayboxing is simple and ugly ON PURPOSE
i know no one likes to talk about blizzard but it's really common knowledge that their alphas, etc. literally have huge placeholder text that says things like "CUTSCENE HERE" or "NPC TEXT" for unfinished or in development cutscenes or dialogue. and idk. that seems like it should remain normal.

The thing thats so insidious about using AI this way is that one of the main ways artists get hired are studios looking for art references and they find us and reach out.

This is removing a major avenue to get work if they can just generate nameless derivations of our ideas.
