When @garyseconomics.bsky.social talks, more people in general should listen
It’s time for the super-rich to pay up, not working people. Will the Chancellor Rachel Reeves listen?

A 2% annual tax on net wealth above £10 million could raise £24 billion every single year.

Let’s have a look at a crazy Twitter to newspaper pipeline story and debunk as we go! 🔎👍🏼

Most asylum seekers arrive with their valuables long lost in bombed or abandoned homes, stolen, or sold to afford the dangerous clandestine passage to safety

The real thing of value to be snatched from refugees under these proposals is far more painful: their families & futures

A specific urgent useful thing to do - I hope Liz Kendall, Shabana Mahmood and Keir Starmer will consider - is for our elected government to prod + wake up regulators (Ofcom, EHRC) who are letting a mainstream platform X protect + defend the racial slur "paki" unlawfully

bsky.app/profile/sund...
Have we entered a racism timewarp?

Why does X routinely defend the racist abuse that it has a legal duty to remove?

A binary choice: must we tolerate the use of "paki" as a racist slur in the Britain of 2025 - or will government act to Make Twitter Lawful Again?

Fixing policy using an auction process is a h£ll of a cry for help from a supposedly competent government
My sense from the PLP this morning is that they essentially see a lot of this as an opening offer. No one thinks the jewellery policy etc will survive first contact with reality. However, that was also the view they took on welfare initially...

Confiscating jewellery from survivors of a war zone makes you look like a fucking Nazi. And the obscene thing is, that is the intention. It's there to look appropriately harsh. Indecent. Filthy. A moral stain. And no-one of good character would have ever proposed such a thing in the first place.

The whole thread above this -inc. answering someone who essentially asks "Aren't people are always going to people?"- leads us to this conclusion.
More people understanding that the bad guys already know how to exploit this could impel us to act faster rather than just wringing our hands in horror.
The point isn’t that people were ever calm and wise, it’s that the systems around us used to dampen emotional spikes, now they amplify them. Human nature is constant, but the information architecture is different, and that shift matters politically.

Governments and voters are both reacting to algorithm-shaped “public opinion,” not grounded priorities. Immigration feels urgent because platforms amplify fear, pulling parties into hollow performances of toughness. The far right reads that drift as confirmation it’s winning.
Not everyone is unhappy about the Government's descent into anti-refugee politics
