In Canada, top 1% of wealth holders hold 24% of total wealth.
Meanwhile, PM Carney has an ‘austerity budget’, which will impact the disadvantaged.
Patriotic Millionaires Canada, which I am a board member of, estimated that a 3% tax on wealth over $100-million could raise $25-billion annually.

I did a deep-dive into Ben Mulroney's extracurricular activities:

At the same time as Mulroney is filling-in as host of The West Block, he is also working for two registered lobby groups and as an adviser to several companies – some of whose CEOs he's interviewed on Global News 640 Toronto radio
Ben Mulroney is blurring the lines between journalism, business, lobbying and partisan politics

The new host of Global News’ national political news show also works for registered lobby groups, advises businesses and hosted election events for Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives earlier this year

The continued interest in cloud computing (and using American and other non-Canadian companies for it) is also a major threat to Canadian sovereignty.

If we lose control of our data and information, we could easily lose ourselves.

Notable that there's no published algorithmic impact assessment for this system yet. Regulation is clear that AIAs are to be published prior to production. Yet here we are, $15.3 million in the hole on an incredibly risky system with no transparency or public input.
Coming in 2017, every traveler entering Canada will get a "compliance score," which will dictate if the person is going to be sent for secondary exam as part of border screening. Here's how the AI-assisted system works and why critics are concerned:

Canada’s border agency plans to use AI to screen everyone entering the country — and single out ‘higher risk’ people
The tool is expected to launch as early as 2027 and is meant to help border services officers decide whether to refer travellers and the goods they are carrying for

Worth a watch:

Head of Signal, Meredith Whittaker, on so-called "agentic AI" and the difference between how it's described in the marketing and what access and control it would actually require to work as advertised.

My second piece for the Guardian in a month! As promised, I wrote about Bill C-2 the border bill and how it’s MAGA-inspired

If it goes ahead we will see the construction of a surveillance state that is in some ways worse than the US, writes political columnist Erica Ifill

This is an extreme example, but it's important to remember that editors make changes like these all the time for—in their minds—a variety of reasons.

But whatever the intent—however malicious or not—the result is still the same ... it's erasing trans existence from our own stories and lives.
hello cis friends
this is what people mean by trans genocide

if a type of person does not officially exist, then any harm against them cannot be measured or reported

this headline change isn't even being caused by an executive order

it's simply the NYT editors deciding we don't deserve to exist

Here's my new piece. It's a deep dive into why Millennials have been infantilized and why teenagerness has been extended into young adulthood: it's a tool of social control to render entire generations incapable of organizing to fight back.

“You’ve got an economy that’s dying of cancer, and a political system that doesn’t believe cancer exists.”

True nearly everywhere, but the LPC are more dedicated than most to keeping their heads in the sand on wealth inequality. Would love someone in this leadership race to prove me wrong.

Computers absolutely have the capability to unlock human creativity across an enormously broad spectrum of disciplines and their mutation into read only gambling porno viewers is so goddamned disheartening
This was an absolute choice and I will never stop bring furiously angry at the people who turned their backs on the “bicycle for the mind”, notably INCLUDING Steve Jobs

one of the things we are going to regret most about the last decade is not making cryptocurrency flat illegal. i think you should think hard about what it means to have much of the president's inner circle heavily invested in an asset class which depends on the collapse of the American economy.
