Trance Film and David Lynch, or: Is David Lynch a Surrealist?
Nick Luciano takes a different look at the films of David Lynch through the lens of the midcentury avant-garde tradition of the trance film.

Happy first day of classes to all UNC students! It's heartwarming to think that Bill Belichick's next girlfriend is somewhere among them 🥹

Late to this post, but is Fetterman too proud to resign and thinks he can just be so unbelievably incompetent and terrible that he'll be recalled?

(And doesn't know that Senators can't be recalled.)

A lot of this country’s problems boil down to straight white men who see themselves as some sort of default “normal” but any variation on that as “an identity” that is “political”

It really is incredible how despite a half-century of expanding executive power, ballooning the debt, bloating the government, and policing private behavior, the GOP is still discussed as the party of small government libertarianism and fiscal responsibility. Just no relation to reality at all.

I am grieving the barbarism that is going to unfurl from all this. People are going to die. Livelihoods gone. All to feed a corrupt kleptocracy.

I see every day up close how different it is from the first time around. There are no guardrails. A disaster. I’m sorry we have to live through this.

Imagine watching Blue Velvet on Tubi and it cuts from Frank Booth doing some of the most depraved things you've ever seen to a fucking Charmin Bears ad.

Stripping birthright citizenship from people born in this country goes against rights guaranteed in the Constitution. We must stand against unconstitutional actions and stand up for the fundamental rights granted to people in the United States of America.

Tried my hand at the Best Films since 2000 ballot. I'm decently happy with it, although my shortlist was 3x the size.

I guess that the lesson that we learned from Iraq was "make sure that everyone knows that it's based on a lie from day 1."

We have a madman in the White House who is actively trying to trigger total war.

If Jeffries, Schumer, or any other Democratic leaders try to justify this, shrug indifferently, or write a strongly-worded letter and call it a day, they need to step down or be aggressively primaried.

It's a truly jarring split screen that Kristi Noem's goons attacking Sen Padilla happened at almost the exact same time as 16 Dem senators crossed lines to vote with the GOP to invoke cloture on the crypto bill, forfeiting any leverage.

Dems need to act like an opposition.

There’s no better moment to stop drawing the contrast, good versus bad immigrants, families v felons, and instead to full-throatedly insist on rights and dignity for all
The cruelty in today's politics feels horribly corrosive. Bringing up that hard-working immigrant families — undocumented, yes, but not violent criminals — are being ripped apart based on immigration status doesn't bring compassion or even pause, but gleeful cheers.
