Eh, a lot of "FOSS" contributions are happily vacuumed up into propriety net-negative products without much recompense for their maintainers.
weird example, given that the fact that we live in a universe where nearly all technology infrastructure is dependent on an operating system developed as FOSS is not a gift that fell out of the sky.

mass linux tinkering and experimentation very materially *has* helped democratize technology.

If nothing else we need to reopen USAID and fund it more than domestic welfare programs as we have a growing debt to the world that is almost impossible to repay
Russia is far too poor to make America as a whole substantially richer. But it’s definitely got enough to make the president and his friends richer.
“In days after Alaska, a European intel agency distributed a hard-copy report in an envelope to some of the continent’s most senior national security officials, who were shocked by the contents: Inside were details of the commercial and economic plans the Trump admin had been pursuing with Russia.”

Experts are good and we should listen to them actually and something being popular isn’t the same thing as it being good. The Swiss style of referendum democracy led to them banning minarets because the majority of people were Islamophobic
I think making a boogeyman out of technocracy is a bad idea for the left.

I think to the extent that MAGA is a backlash against experts telling people to take their vaccines, or to tolerate immigration, these are just things we're going to have to live with. I don't want democracy on these issues.
A return to technocratic liberal centrism would be the death knell of democracy.

I don't want reactionary policies and I don't care how popular they are.

I think part of the point of government is saying no to reactionaries.

The even worse part is that if you try and apply this to any situation other than politics people will rightly laugh at you and call you a fool.

"It's not the drunk driver's fault I lost my kids in that car accident, I blame the paramedics who couldn't save them at the scene!"
All joking aside, the fundamental flaw with some people's view of politics is that no bad result is ever the fault of the bad actor who did it. It's always the fault of every other actor who "failed to stop them". The obvious drawbacks to this way of thinking are somehow obscured to its adherents.

Yeah and we have the best universities in the world, so
just a reminder that *lots* of countries have universities, and (to my knowledge) none of them but the U.S. treat their universities as largely minor league sports franchises
LSU is paying its previous football coach over $50 million NOT to coach there while likely guaranteeing Kiffin something approaching double that, all while having an academic hiring freeze and budget cuts across the board. What is the purpose of a university (rhetorical)?

I also disagree here just because a football field, even a modest one is so much more expensive than anything a book club is going to ask for
sports at universities should be treated like every other extra-curricular: they get their share of the student activities budget just like the drama club and the movie club. if they want more, hold a bake sale.

The European and South American soccer model is literally an academy model, and they play in minor leagues. And yes, some of those teams did grow out of universities! Europe has been doing this almost as long as the US has.

I’m not excusing coach buyouts but please be accurate here.

I’m not entirely sure if this is a problem. Like this is true but that isn’t necessarily much of a bad thing.

the primary thing that TPUSA provides to young conservatives is a blueprint for weaponizing the abject cowardice of university administrators against individual teachers and instructors, and university admins should take a long look in the mirror and think about what that says about them
