RUSSIA IS A MESS AND THESE DAYS WE CAN SEE RIGHT THROUGH IT

Russia occupied 4336 square kilometers of Ukrainian land, or 0.72% of its total territory according to DeepState. On a casualty count of some half million men give or take, because it’s been a bad year.

Hi All, I've been puzzling about why the analysis of the Russo-Ukraine war has been so uneven (to put it kindly). I think, in the end, the problem is that the USA made war look too easy. The US is not a useful case study in understanding war, it is an anomaly. open.substack.com/pub/phillips...

Strange takes on Mayor Zamdani swearing his oath on the Qu’ran. It has nothing to do with church & state. The point of the oath is for the person swearing in to do so upon some text that is sacred TO THEM. Some Presidents swore in w/o any book. John Quincy Adams was sworn on a law book. His choice.

It's New Year, so time to look back and forward. These are 10 things I think we need to recognise in 2026. It’s a response to what I think are profoundly damaging mistaken assumptions I’ve heard and read from practitioners, journalists, and analysts in 2025. Warning: very long🧵

Xi is just a classic, horrible imperialist in the same way that Putin and Trump are
In his New Year’s speech, Xi Jinping signaled a clear intent to push reunification with Taiwan, calling it “historically inevitable.” As Chinese forces launch blockade-style drills near the island, it’s increasingly likely Xi views 2026, and a distracted Trump, as a window of opportunity for action.

Reminds me of a Soviet-era Bulgarian joke. Govt announces Bulgaria’s IT industry is so advanced, they’ve started exporting computers to Japan (Yaponiya in Bg). Turns out they were exporting compotes to Yakutiya.

PS. Ragozin is a putinist psyop. I hope no one takes him seriously.

that’s how far they’ve sunk. The myth of Russian might has been shattered.
Ukraine in the other hand needs to get its recruitment issues sorted out and stop mollycoddling its youth. They need to fight and they need to know why. Ukraine’s weakness its manpower issue. Its strength is its resilience.

A MILITARY SUMMARY AS WE START THE NEW YEAR

In the South the loss of Hulaiapole has yet to be truly felt. Ukraine’s forces were spread thin and expected to defend too much with too little.
It resulted in the death of two senior commanders and we’ve seen the pictures of an intact Brigade HQ overrun.

STILL FIGHTING
"We want the end of the war — not the end of Ukraine,
"Does that mean we are ready to surrender? Those who think so have not understood who Ukrainians are. A people who have held on through 1,407 days of a full-scale war."

Yes, separatism - whether the ethnic nationalism kind in Quebec or the right-wing selfish extra bullshit kind in Alberta - is little more than a product of elite-driven populist resentment.
My fear is that people not really hoping to separate will still vote for it - to "send a message" to Ottawa. Hopefully not enough of them to push it into separation negotiations.

Disappointing that the BBC pretends there are good faith negotiations when it's obvious Trump is trying to bully Ukraine into a de facto surrender and Pu demands even clearer capitulation. Unconscionable to suggest Zelensky's distrust of the serial liar in the Kremlin is the "thorny issue".
Would have thought the obvious issue is the ghoul lurking in the Kremlin’s bunker, sending drones and cruise missiles to kill kids; Putin.
