When he showed up to an immigration meeting in Memphis, Kasper Eriksen thought he was on the verge of becoming a citizen.

Then ICE arrested the Mississippi father of four, not even giving him a chance to say goodbye to his wife, whisking him away to a prison.

@nickjudin.bsky.social reports:

I think attitudes towards government employees are a bit like attitudes towards race and religion and sexuality. Plenty of people are unregenerate bigots in the abstract but have That One Black Friend who They Don’t Think of As Black. There are exceptions in the particular, unreconciled. /1
This comment on r/fednews really stood out to me. Trump and Musk want people to think they're firing do-nothing "bureaucrats," but they're really getting rid of people dedicated to serving this country and keeping it operational. I hope these stories get told.

I was at the National Archives in November & took this photo of my favorite inscription, showing the relationship btwn studying our past & our pursuit of democratic institutions. The illegal GOP destruction of our public resources & institutions relies on the suppression/erasure of our shared past.

Good morning! What hot fresh hell awaits us today? Has Musk stolen all our dogs overnight? Does your toothbrush now have AI in it, and is suddenly racist? Has Trump thrown Santa Claus in an El Salvadoran prison? Why is everything sticky?? Tune in to the SERIES FINALE OF AMERICA to find out!

I don't know if this is literally true. But it helps to clarify some arguments that @mcopelov.bsky.social and I are pulling together about the political economy of crypto and state power. If tech billionaires are massively overleveraged on two products that nobody wants, only the state can save them

i watched this 1997 TV special on "what if the US became a personalist patriarchal dictatorship" and it's not good, but it is striking. i might write about it or better make a video about it this week.

I do think it is important to be inspiring, to be as effective as possible, and where you can, to be both. That’s the goal.

But the effective options are thin right now and there is SO MUCH FUCKING SHIT to respond to. Let me try to sketch out briefly ten days in the life of a House press strategy

I could try to explain part of the response and why I think this is wrong but people would just get mad and ratio it so I do not think I will
I really can’t wrap my head around congressional Democrats’ response to the past 12 days of crises. It reeks of pathetic capitulation. Trump is asserting dictatorial powers of absolute control over the entire government and the reaction is “we don’t swing at every pitch”? An appalling abdication.

Take this advice now pls. Below is a taste of how reality should be conveyed by the press. It’s beyond brilliant; it activates your internal alarms. Sample below.

Here are the options on the table (which are not mutually exclusive):

1. House Dems bring articles of impeachment*

2. Senate Dems play constitutional hardball and obstruct everything

3. State AGs litigate (and prosecute) everything they can

4. Citizens march en mass

In case it helps someone:

The phrase “We don’t do / say that here” is immensely useful in managing people who feel emboldened to try to push boundaries and test behaviour norms in your spaces.
It’s a bland statement of fact, doesn’t contain an accusation, and can be used by anyone including peers.

But we now live in a time where even credible media deems the online postings of random people worthy of inclusion in stories on matters such as this. Social media unfortunately adds confusion to very serious events and interferes with our ability to accurately understand what has happened and why.

It would be difficult for America’s enemies to execute a sabotage operation that compromises U.S. governance, security and prosperity more than this administration is doing of its own accord.

Hey, it’s the Trump breakfast inflation plan! First eggs, now coffee, and once the raids start in the meat packing plants, bacon is next. Oh wait, does Canadian wheat go into our cereals? So even your kids are out of luck.

(I know he didn’t do the eggs, but since he blamed Biden, all’s fair …)

Imagine spending your life being a second-generation NASA employee — she was running NASA's John F. Kennedy Space Center before this week — and having it come to this.

A lot of people are making a lot of decisions already this week that should stay with them for life.
Here's an e-mail that just went out to NASA agency wide. 🔭
