Just read this - a couple more points to make with Nexplanon especially getting a REMS slapped on it: a) it gives insurances an excuse to deny and reject claims in favor of other types of birth control and b) it limits the likelihood of a generic being created. And yall - these are VERY expensive.
The biggest barriers to reproductive healthcare often sound inane and boring, which helps them fly under the radar. Behind this snooze of a regulatory change is a long history of paternalism at the FDA, including and perhaps especially under Democratic administrations, in fact:
The FDA Quietly Slapped More Restrictions on the Birth Control Implant
The agency recently approved Nexplanon for up to five years of use—but it also imposed extra regulations that leave some providers worried.

Glad to see a bit more coverage of the Mount Sinai/Anthem dispute, a huge and underreported story that affects the medical care of 200,000 patients, myself included
Mount Sinai, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield contract dispute could force thousands to find new doctors
Mount Sinai and Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield failed to reach a contract agreement by Dec. 31, which means about 9,000 Mount Sinai physicians are no longer considered in-network.

The FDA recently approved the birth control implant Nexplanon for use up to five years, instead of three. But to providers' surprise, it also placed the device under a special monitoring protocol called REMS, which is infamous for the way it has limited access to medication abortion.

Don't sleep on this wonky-sounding story. An expert told Garnet this birth control news is "troubling" and asked “What else is this going to be applied to going forward? Is every reproductive health product going to be subject to this layer of scrutiny?"
NEW: Trump's FDA recently approved Nexplanon for five years of use, but it quietly added extra regulations that leave some providers worried about access. The agency imposed a REMS program that only exists for 73 other drugs—including medication abortion.

Many providers did not yet know about the REMS when I contacted them.

I wanted to know the backstory of the executive order that defined "man" and "woman"—the foundation for the Trump admin's targeting of trans people.

So I took a deep dive into the conservative strategy & distorted feminism behind it. And I talked to the author.

Other outlets had reported some of the allegations against former PPSE interim CEO Mairo Akposé, but @susanrinkunas.com uncovered new details, including that Akposé wanted to halt abortions. PPSE's board had cleared Akposé of wrongdoing, but she stepped down not long after we published this story 👀
