As a teacher of 10 year olds, I can tell you that we work very hard all year long to drill what bullying is, why it’s bad, and how to help others who are being bullied. We are constantly talking about it. And it works.
it is an underrated miracle of the 21st century that we really did massively, massively reduce bullying in schools
My experience as well. So far we're 2-for-2 on kids having a largely bullying/abuse-free middle school experience. Not without bumpy spots of course, but light years away from what I endured.

My hot take: the anti-bullying stuff has really worked, which is why conservatives are pushing back at it.

for what it’s worth I got roped into helping out with my sixth grader’s extracurricular thing so I’ve had more recent contact with middle schoolers who aren’t mine than I usually do, and biased sample/biased reviewer/etc but my verdict is that the kids are all right

So the end-run around the separation ordinance is that ICE calls up and lies? That's sure an ENORMOUS gap in the law, don't you think, @mayorcarter.bsky.social?

I was at the protest today: SPPD was on site when I got there, but their numbers continued to swell. The crowd was loud af but not at all violent- nor were they impeding agents "doing their jobs" or residents. SPPD was in good spirits- many were smiling and laughing. The protesters were told to +

What!!? No!!
the recession indicator I do not see ANYBODY talking about is that smarties reduced the number of smarties per roll from 15 to 10, and me personally, I think we should be making a way bigger stink about that

This is me after being pepper sprayed by SPPD. The crowd was noisy but completely nonviolent. There was a lot of anger but no violence from the crowd- SPPD escalated.

Monitoring is not enough. This was 6 blocks from my house. We are a quiet, peaceful neighborhood. We should not have federal stormtroopers shooting tear gas at us. Something more needs to be done!
We are monitoring the situation in St. Paul and working to understand what unfolded. We received no heads up from federal authorities on this operation.

While we are always willing to work together on public safety, that is clearly not what this chaotic situation was about.

6 blocks from my house. Fuck ICE. I have a group of 10 year olds to teach or I’d be there right now. As soon as the bell rings, I’m there.

"But-"
"NOW."
"Okay..."
"Were you followed?"
"What?"
"WERE YOU FOLLOWED?"
"I don't think so."
"You have your passport?"
"I'm not sure."
"Never mind, open the glovebox."
"Alright. Hey, wha-"
"You know how to use that?"
"Frank, what-?"
"Better get used to calling me Jim."

None of this is a surprise when you realize Trump clearly has dementia. The playful batting of Mamdani and MBS’s arms; and the “quiet, piggy” comment are all moments where you can see his impulse control completely disappear. He is a child in those moments, reacting only to the current stimulus.

The President of the United States just called for Democratic members of Congress to be executed. "HANG THEM", he posted.

If you're a person of influence in this country and you haven't picked a side, maybe now would be the time to pick a fucking side.

The Epstein bill is headed to Trump’s desk as we speak.

So, what now? Well, a lot of panic, it seems. I have seen every single possible worst case scenario all over social media in the last hour, so let’s go through this step by step. My only request, read the whole thing before commenting.

Just struck me: the clerkship budget can be used as a form of retirement incentive, can’t it?

All justices under the age of 65 get clerks, all those over get none. You can linger, but you’re on your own AND elite law profs no longer have an incentive to downplay your badness in op-eds.
What I first said in sarcasm I increasingly think is a real thing to consider:

Move SCOTUS to a strip mall in rural Kansas.

We can’t fire them. Impeachment* is functionally dead. The 18-yr term thing is a fantasy.

But we can kill a lot of their perks.

Bet Kav would retire fast.
Devastating piece on the human toll of Kavanaugh Stops.

Especially infuriating to know that rich white guys like Brett K can simply close their eyes to the human suffering their racist jurisprudence has unleashed.

I am on my way home to Toronto and the aurorae are absolutely phenomenal.

If you are anywhere in the northern half of the continent, get outside and look up! Or better still, put your camera on a 10 second exposure and point it up.

I’ve never seen the northern lights like this. Snack in the middle of the city (St Paul) and the colors were so strong. Even stronger though the camera lens.

I’m reading this series to my class of 5th graders right now. Cannot recommend it enough. It is often hailed as the first existential high fantasy series rather than Christian allegory one. The journey that Taran takes is powerful and one that resonates with my students every time.
TARAN WANDERER by Lloyd Alexander had a HUGE impact on me as a kid. A joyfully democratic instead of a monarchic vision of high fantasy - and life. Tremendously grateful to have read it when I did.
performative reading, lack of reading skills, nobody's reading anymore -- NO!

tell me about a book that changed you

for me? the *extremely* ahistorical novel, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY which I read at 13 and was like, "Oh, art can be *everything* to a maker, for good and bad"

If they vote with Republicans, then they are Republicans. They should be considered to be the enemy and should be voted against at every point. Including this idiot.
Democrats have been fighting for months to address America's healthcare crisis

For the millions who will lose coverage
For people with cancer who won't get the care they need
For working families who can't afford to pay $25K more a year for healthcare

We will keep fighting

notable that this is what the co-founder of Indivisible is saying

this isn’t going to just be a handful of angry posters trying to organize primaries, you’re going to see real organizational muscle behind this I think
We tried to show them after the last surrender. There's no sense in trying to convince them anymore. Primaries are the only path to a fighting opposition party now.

Do you know what you used to be able to do when you turned on the TV? Watch TV. Now I have no idea how to actually watch a regular network channel. Doesn’t seem to be a way to do that on my “smart” tv. Really?

Wow looks like my favorite team is in an entertaining, competitive college football game. If only the YouTube TV package I pay $90/month for allowed me to watch it!
