Michael Caine as Scrooge in The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992)

There are hundreds of Christmas Carol adaptations. But I think this is the definitive version for a generation. Which is sort of ridiculous, but also amazing and fully deserved.

You there boy! What days is this?

It’s 24th December

Leaving the details aside, I think we can wave goodbye to majority governments for the foreseeable future. We're entering the age of coalitions.

Greens, Labour and LibDems would be wise to start planning now. Cos you bet Reform and Tories will be.
🚨 NEW | Poll shows Greens ahead of Labour

🔵 CON: 22% (+2)
🟢 GRN: 19% (+1)
🔴 LAB: 18% (=)

I find the endless, often pointless drama that has typified UK politics coverage for a decade as draining & unedifying as anyone. But, *as of now* & by every relevant measure, Starmer’s position is perilously close to untenable. Of course people are planning for a future where he’s no longer leader.

It's strange seeing the centre and the right mocking anyone getting excited about the Green Party. Maybe their ceiling IS 17%. Maybe it's a flash-in-the-pan thing. But we are allowed to get excited about feeling represented on the left after almost six years of being told "you're done, stfu".

Force of nature, that's me.
I have a wonderful group of friends, who I have known for 20 years. And friends I've been able to keep in touch with, from my first friend to colleagues in the office I left in the summer.
I can honestly say that I wouldn't be the same person (but much is that is @morbidsparks.bsky.social)

How is this repeatedly made into a policy issue - by *all* parties - when the blunt fact of the matter is that grown adults who are obliged to pay for their own education, and relentlessly pursued to repay their loans, should be able to study whatever the fuck they want.

The depressing thing about today is that it was sold as Starmer's answer to Reform. This is apparently what he has to offer as a vision of a confident diverse nation: ID cards. Just utterly joyless and emotionless.

I'm sure there's someone in No.10 somewhere who is absolutely chuffed with getting the piece in the Telegraph, partying like it's 1998. They're not even fighting the last war. They're fighting the war before that.

Or at least I think that's what it says. Obviously I can't read it. If you are going to announce something like ID cards, perhaps you could at least do it somewhere people can read it?

Yep, that's great. Just fantastic. We were told that Starmer would lay out the patriotic case for diversity today. What we got was an article in the Telegraph, behind a paywall, about how the left failed to tackle immigration and now we all have to have ID cards www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2025/09...

Pet parrots which typically live alone (whilst those in the wild live in large flocks) were given the technology to call each other. They would use it for up to three hours a day, and developed favourite friends 💔

I don't think there can be much doubt now that Burnham is preparing for a leadership contest.
In a long list of extraordinary things that have happened today, this strength of this statement by Andy Burnham's new movement is something else. A proper shot across the bows.

Flash mobs : generally, no.
This is magnificent. Full street theatre. (And what they do with the buildings on one side is brilliant.)
Bohemian Rhapsody Flashmob consisting of 30 musicians and singers on a street in Paris.

I reckon Freddie Mercury would have loved this.

[Sorry ... had to choose the lowest quality and cut into two for BlueSky. Hopefully the audio survived.]

If anyone genuinely believed this ridiculous "the brain isn't fully formed until 25; you shouldn't make irreversible life-changing choices til then" grift, they'd be insisting that people shouldn't be able to join the army, get married, have kids, etc until then either.

But look: they don't.

Every day gives me a new appreciation of the New Labour project. Many things went wrong, Iraq most catastrophically. But they had an idea of what they wanted to do. Current events are showing that doesn't happen by chance.

I wouldn't worry about the exact details of a security guarantee because I don't think there's any chance Putin will sign up to anything that has one even if US involvement is limited.

He wants a subjugated Ukraine forced into Russia's sphere of influence.
