Success in academia often has more to do with luck, patronage and the job market than “hard work”.
Good academics acknowledge this.
I worked hard, but I was in the right place at the right time on occasion. Historians far more talented than I have fallen between the cracks.

In grad school, I saw a philosopher give a talk about mental representations to an interdisciplinary audience. The first question in Q&A was a rude and dismissive comment from a neuroscientist who mocked the idea that anyone would bother talking about representations when studying the brain.
Philosophy has jumped the shark.

If anyone in the philosophy community wonders why their neuroscientist colleagues don’t pay them any mind, read this paper.

My paper 'Representations are (still) theoretical posits' is forthcoming in a special of Theoria on representations in cognitive science. Preprint available at philpapers.org/rec/DRARAS-2.

One problem is we focus implicitly on truth as an exercise of the authority of sovereign knowers, to the exclusion of truth as something we owe to others. Perhaps the current condition is not so much 'post-truth' (as there's plenty of truth-claims being asserted) as 'truth without truthfulness.'
in all seriousness: one of the most important philosophical questions of our time
It does seem to be getting out of hand.

How does a society reestablish the cultural taboo against lying out out of your ass?

In 2010, anti-copyright activist Aaron Swartz hanged himself after being prosecuted to the full extent of the law for making copyrighted academic publications freely available. Today, academic publishers are insisting those copyrights be lifted to feed the corporate AI slop machine.

Here's a feed that does 1 and 3 but not so good at 2. Draws from across arxiv, SSRN, philpapers and a few other domains. bsky.app/profile/did:...
Can someone come up with a feed for AI research that:

1. Shows research not multiple reposts of the same wishcasting news articles
2. Shows new stuff each time you look at it (doesn’t just have the same posts in the same order)
3. Can find new posters, not just a predefined list

If you could teach an AI about your life, personality, and values, would you consult it on big decisions? Why or why not?
