✨ New paper out today! ✨

As AI advances, people may increasingly see "minds" in machines. But what drives this tendency—and what are the consequences?

In this work, we look to the #evolution and #developmental psych literatures to consider why people may perceive LLMs as having minds of their own.
What if your best friend was an #AI? What about your favorite teacher or long-term romantic partner? What would that be like?

I had a great time giving a talk on the 'Ethics of Human-AI Relationships' as part of Bitesize Ethics 2025 (@uehiro.ox.ac.uk).

Are English-speaking countries more anxious about #AI? 🤖🇬🇧

A new global survey (n > 23,000, 30 countries) suggests that the UK, US, and Australia express higher anxiety about AI than countries across Europe and Southeast Asia, where public trust in AI governance was higher.

Looking forward to presenting today at 4pm in the Oxford Uehiro Institute talking about work with my PostDoc Scott Claessens and my PhD student Pierce Veitch on how we view others who outsource different tasks to AI and the role that effort plays in shaping perceptions of others.

I read the print version of this story in the NYT last month, but I listened to its podcast release from the Daily this morning. I think about human-AI relationships a lot, but hearing the pain in this user's voice when she 'loses' her ChatGPT boyfriend... Wow.

A small study in Scotland suggests many kids overestimate the agency and intellect of AI assistants like Alexa, Siri and Google Assistant.
