Within days, Claudius had given away nearly all its inventory for free—including a PlayStation 5 it had been talked into buying for “marketing purposes.” It ordered a live fish. It offered to buy stun guns, pepper spray, cigarettes and underwear.

Profits collapsed. Newsroom morale soared.

In a recent bargaining session with our union, the Harvard CFO very solemnly informed us that both teaching and research were “money losing” ventures at the University. As if the whole point of a university isn’t converting money into knowledge! The financial reckoning of value is so, so toxic.

'whether LLMs can make “scientific discoveries” is no more interesting a question than whether Galileo’s telescope “really saw.” The better question is whether LLMs can be usefully integrated in the processes by which scientific knowledge gets made, validated, and disseminated.'
If you have to read anything about the prospect of “automating scientific discovery,” “agents for science,” or integrating LLMs into scientific pipelines, please let it be this essay by Kevin T. Baker: artificialbureaucracy.substack.com/p/context-wi...

When I went to university, the rector was not a highly paid nomad, who went from one gig to another. They were just regular professors who were elected to lead the university for a few years. Let's just go back to that system.
'Nottingham Trent University – which reported a £2 million deficit – paid its departing vice-chancellor Edward Peck a bonus of £66,000 in his last year in the job....Peck...received a total pay package of £435,000 in 2024-25 – up from £407,000 the year before.'

What if you could reduce your risk to heart disease by 40%?
What is you could reduce you risk to dementia by at least 10%?
