A coworker commented that a better way to understand the AI bubble is to disaggregate it into a larger "garbagetech bubble," made up discrete scams.

"You Need Al Skills Today To Be Ready For The Future"/"The Future Belongs To Those Who Know AI" So, you've probably seen a lot of stuff — maybe even in your own workplace! — about how you're gonna need Al skills in the future, because, uh. Well, you're gonna need them, and you're gonna get left behind if you don't have them. If anybody ever says this to you, please ask them to be specific, because at this point I'm not even confident I can make up a task that Al can do for me. In fact, here's a simple one: please name me somebody who has gotten significantly better at their job using Al. One person you know. One. Just one. Try it. I am, in theory, exactly the person who should be getting the most out of Al. I write a lot. I research a lot. I constantly have to keep an eye on stuff. I pull stuff out of large piles of data. I think I make like 500 searches a week, I'm a complete animal. I talk back and forth with my editor Matt Hughes constantly to brainstorm ideas. So why don't I use Al? Surely it would be perfect, right? Nope! Al is a terrible researcher. I've used everything from Al mode on Google to the most expensive generative search engines available for large hedge funds, and in 99.9% of cases I've found nothing new or interesting or novel. That edge case was one time when a search engine pulled up a single quote from an earnings statement. Once. One time. So, what do people mean by "Al skills"? Prompt engineering. They mean "how can you get this product that's sold and hyped as a panacea for every informational problem to do the thing that it's meant to do," and the answer is usually "it can't do it, but the way to get it close is to find nuanced ways to ask it to do stuff." In a very real sense, "Al skills training" is actually Al training you - making you fill in the gaps, making you do the work that this alleged "intelligence" does.

The thing thats so insidious about using AI this way is that one of the main ways artists get hired are studios looking for art references and they find us and reach out.

This is removing a major avenue to get work if they can just generate nameless derivations of our ideas.
Swen Vincke @LarAtLarian Holy fuck guys we’re not "pushing hard" for or replacing concept artists with AI. We have a team of 72 artists of which 23 are concept artists and we are hiring more. The art they create is original and I’m very proud of what they do. I was asked explicitly about concept art and our use of Gen AI. I answered that we use it to explore things. I didn’t say we use it to develop concept art. The artists do that. And they are indeed world class artists. We use AI tools to explore references, just like we use google and art books. At the very early ideation stages we use it as a rough outline for composition which we replace with original concept art. There is no comparison. Companies have also struggled with Al's lack of consistency. Jeremy Nielsen, general manager at North American railroad service provider Cando Rail and Terminals, said the company recently tested an Al chatbot for employees to study internal safety reports and training materials. But Cando ran into a surprising stumbling block: the models couldn't consistently and correctly summarize the Canadian Rail Operating Rules, a roughly 100-page document that lays out the safety standards for the industry. Sometimes the models forgot or misinterpreted the rules; other times they invented them from whole cloth. Al researchers say models often struggle to recall what appears in the middle of a long document. Cando has dropped the project for now, but is testing other ideas. So far the company has spent $300,000 on developing Al products. "We all thought it'd be the easy button," Nielsen said. "And that's just not what happened."

If the public resists the hype, then line does not go up.

So they hype harder and harder, repelling most people with their hard sell tactics.

It's a downward spiral.

We do not have to offer and I believe indeed should not offer any benefit of the doubt: Anything sold as "AI" should be presumed ineffective, exploitative, environmentally ruinous, bigotry-amplifying and otherwise until proven otherwise.

But let's turn that around: Anyone who wants to call what they are doing "AI" should be accountable for making clear why their product (or research) isn't in fact slop. That's on them. The rest of us do not need to hold space for that.

Hard no to this: French publisher Harlequin has told translators that their work will now be done by AI. They can ‘revise’ AI translations at much lower rate. It’s a subsidiary of Harper Collins so treat this as a test for rollout elsewhere

Depuis quelques semaines, plusieurs dizaines de traducteurs et traductrices travaillant régulièrement avec les éditions Harlequin reçoivent les unes après les autres un appel téléphonique leur annonçant la fin de leur collaboration avec la maison d’édition. Leurs contrats en cours seront les derniers. Collection par collection, Harlequin abandonne la traduction : un prestataire externe, l’agence de communication Fluent Planet, se chargera de passer les textes dans un logiciel de « traduction automatique » et de recruter directement en freelance des relecteurs et relectrices chargées de post-éditer la sortie machine en français. L’objectif affiché est de gagner en rentabilité en rognant sur le temps de travail. C’est, à notre connaissance, la première fois en France qu’une maison d’édition passe à grande échelle à la « traduction automatique » et à la post-édition, de surcroît en externalisant cette activité. Dès lors, mérite-t-elle encore le nom de « maison d’édition » ? De telles pratiques sont inacceptables. Des personnes, parfois collaboratrices de longue date de la maison, perdent brutalement une source de revenus régulière, ne se voyant offrir comme compensation que la possibilité (sans aucune garantie, d’ailleurs) de travailler au rabais pour un prestataire externe, Fluent Planet, au lieu de traduire pour une maison d’édition. Une perspective que beaucoup des traducteurs et traductrices concernées refusent. Pour cesser de travailler avec nous, artistes-auteurs et autrices, pas besoin de licenciement ni de préavis, même si la collaboration a été régulière pendant cinq, dix, voire vingt ans. La réalité de la perte brutale d’activité et de revenus n’en est pas moins là. Nous subissons de plein fouet la précarité extrême de notre condition d’artistes-autrices et auteurs : nous n’avons aucun droit au chômage, et certaines personnes concernées proches de l’âge de la retraite ne pourront même pas compter sur une pension décente du fait du non-appel des cotisations de la part de l’AGESSA. Dans ces circonstances, nous devons en tant que profession nous élever collectivement face à ce qui s’apparente à un plan social invisible. Ces pratiques sont une trahison des travailleurs et travailleuses du livre, mais aussi une trahison du lectorat. C’est brader totalement l’activité de traduction, au mépris des personnes qui traduisent et de celles qui lisent. C’est mettre le doigt dans l’engrenage de la dégradation des productions éditoriales, dans une logique délétère du « good enough » (qualité passable) qui dépossède les travailleurs et travailleuses du livre de leur savoir-faire et de leur créativité, et le lectorat d’un accès à une littérature humaine et vivante. Travailleurs, travailleuses du livre, directions de maisons d’édition, lecteurs, lectrices : refusons que la « traduction automatique » mette le pied dans la porte des maisons d’édition et réaffirmons notre attachement inconditionnel à des textes humains, créés par des humaines et des humains, dans des conditions de travail dignes. I'm sorry, but this is just manufactured consent for something that IS going to fail because the infrastructure literally CANNOT keep up with the consumption demand of AI.
