Quite a good insult for humans as well, I reckon: "He thinks he's a big deal but when it comes right down to it he's nothing more than organised water."
I once heard someone who had a decent amount of knowledge about these sort of things describe jellyfish as "essentially just organised water" and I still think about that quite a lot.

tfw you're looking for a written how-to guide and they're all videos. I don't want videos! I don't want to have to find the useful bits! I don't want to listen to your backstory! Just give me words and diagrams!

I spoke to women (and one man) about what they find so hot about Heated Rivalry.

"The main reason I read MM is I just absolutely cannot stand reading or watching women suffer at the hands of men – in any way, big or small, anymore... We, as women, can just watch this and relax.”
Women are feral for Heated Rivalry. What does that say about men?

Here is a video of a frozen creek that had begun to thaw, and the water was flowing beneath the thin ice on top. I took this because it was soothing and wonderfully bloopy and I wanted to listen to it for hours. You are all welcome to enjoy it, too. Let your brain settle here and rest for a moment.

This is something that needs to be hammered home more- with apps and real time info, taking a bus is a vastly different experience now than when I first started taking them in 1989- the days of standing at a bus stop for 40m wondering if the bus is even running that day are long over
One thing I wrote about here is how technology has made buses *way* more convenient while techno-futurists were obsessed with flying taxis and self-driving cars.

A THREAD, which I am calling 'Some Of The Many Reasons Lichen And Moss Are Fucking Brilliant'.

1. They make public seating super comfy.

There are over 18,000 types of lichen in existence. My personal favourite is ‘village bench lichen’, which devotes its entire existence selflessly to gradually making communal public seating more furry and comfortable.

Wish we'd known about this tool from @conradgodfrey.com when we made our last episode of Map Men. Instantly visualise where place names are across Britain. Excellent stuff!

(See if you can make it show where the Danelaw is.)

I have thought this for a while, & that an obvious advantage for tutorial-system universities like Oxford is that it’s quite hard to use AI to cheat your way through an hour 1:1 or 1:2 in person with an expert, or in supervised exams. Which is why it’s so stupid of them to have partnered with OpenAI
Predicting that some universities will soon pledge to provide AI-free instruction, and that this will be an advantage in recruiting and training top students
Nothing will make you an education AI skeptic faster than grading some college take home assignments. Admins who haven’t been in a classroom in years push it as a learning tool. Students are laughing at them as they use it as a cheating tool. It’s all instructors are texting about with each other.

Re-posting with alt text because the post accompanying this is obviously wrong, it's clearly a picture of a woman on a Crosscountry train having found a place to sit on the floor and read, her coffee cup beside her, folks queuing for the loo behind her

The WI and Girlguiding have been pressured to exclude trans women – yet the law is clear as mud | Jess O’Thomson
Since the supreme court decision, organisations have faced lobbying and legal threats. But trans people are protected by discrimination law too, says Jess O’Thomson of the Good Law Project

Cruelty is anhedonic. It rarely delivers the euphoria promised because, in the abstract, what feels righteous and joyful inevitably reveals itself to be sordid and small. Then it's "No not like that". "No not enough". "No the real battle, the forever war to make this feel good starts now". Forever.
Note how these awful people are getting exactly the exclusions of children that they demanded and *that still isn’t enough for them*: they demand everyone be delighted about it and kiss their arses for being brilliant.

It's been startling to me how much vitriol on here has been directed towards Girlguiding, when I've seen first-hand how well they have treated trans members until now and how this decision was so clearly forced on them.
It's been something seeing the anger caused by the decisions pushed on WI and the Girl Guides. It really comes across like a small group using money to bully and force people to do what they want.

We're watching the wholesale burning of every scrap of dignity afforded to trans people in the UK, their rights, their medical services, their employment, their place within society, their bodily functions.

It is a disgrace, and a disgusting stain on the government and media of this country.

If the Equality Act had never existed, and someone proposed to pass a law banning women’s organisations from choosing to welcome trans people, we’d think it was a pretty extreme proposal. I don’t think it’s less extreme because it’s come about as a result of a new interpretation of an old law.
