Pardon me that this is a little personal.
I first visited the State Library of Victoria aged 12. I held books retrieved from its mountainous stacks with trembling hands. Its stupendous card catalogue blew my schoolboy mind. Search my name in the modern electronic counterpart today and it appears 125 times, mostly for works I researched there. You cannot show trans people “dignity and respect” while you misgender them in conversation, segregate them in public life, and deny them access to health care. Respect for someone means that you recognise their humanity and affirm their rights without compromise.

A reminder: you cannot have gay rights without women’s rights, trans rights, disability rights, etc. We have secured our rights as gay folk to live and love without moral persecution by working in solidarity with other marginalised groups to challenge narrow ideas about bodies, gender and sexuality.
